Is 154CM Dead ?
154CM is nowhere near dead, at least not through other manufacturers. Its the main steel for BM. I do not like it though, way too soft, edge dulls quickly. As for Spyderco, its definitely not used much and I am happy about that. Sometime this year I do not think you will be able to buy any new knives with 154cm, everything is going to at least S30V

If I'm not mistaken, 154CM was originally made (and is used) for the blades of jet turbine engines. It has always been a great knife steel for me. I have no complaints and I hope it stays around for a looonng time.

Well I hope that doesn't mean the Manix 2 is going to become extinct as well. If everything is going to (at Least) S30V then that actually makes me happy to think of the standard production Manix 2 with S30V. But I still think 154CM is a **** of a steel. Maybe a bit past it's prime with all the newer super steels around these days. But 154CM can def hold it's own.INFRNL wrote:154CM is nowhere near dead, at least not through other manufacturers. It's a great steel and one of the SS picks for custom makers. Since its more or less in vg10's league for everything I would be fine if more knives came that way.
The biggest thing is ht and geometry. Spyderco gets these right. My Meerkat was SE AUS8 and it rocked.
It's a matter of being gracious but pushing for new and interesting materials. Spyderco seems to follow the same path. Considering they were doing ZDP-189 in folders almost a decade ago, it sets the bar high.
Note: Wolverine - Talk is the standard Manix2 is going to s30v with a very similar price. It will be interesting if most can tell much a difference.

Yeah VG-10 and 154CM are really close. I like 154CM a bit better...Wolverine666 wrote:I will always like and respect 154CM. Most of my knives that I bought early in my knife collecting years had it. And it has always impressed me. And now it's so affordable as well. What's the closest steel to 154CM ? VG-10 ?
On the hunt for...
I'm trying to expand my steel knowledge. I just bough the 154cm Manix 2 and am excited to get something a little different.
I really need to get a sharpmaker and really get the most out of these blades to understand hands on
It seems like 154cm is a pretty good steel from the responses here

Blerv , The standard Manix 2 is going to S30V ? When is this going to happen ? Very interesting.Blerv wrote:It's a great steel and one of the SS picks for custom makers. Since its more or less in vg10's league for everything I would be fine if more knives came that way.

I think it's a rolling change so not sure. Eric mentioned it on the forums. They are trying to keep pricing the same.Wolverine666 wrote:Blerv , The standard Manix 2 is going to S30V ? When is this going to happen ? Very interesting.
Chances are it will still be hollow ground but still a nice treat :) .
If they could keep it at the same price point, that would be really nice...Blerv wrote:I think it's a rolling change so not sure. Eric mentioned it on the forums. They are trying to keep pricing the same.

Well i will def be getting an S30V Manix 2 if it ever comes to fruition. Until then , my 154CM Manix 2 is fitting the bill nicely. Here's one : Would you rather have a Manix 2 hollow ground with S30V or a Manix 2 FFG with 154CM ? The grind really evens up the playing field in my opinion.
I would choose the FFG 154CM.
But in a perfect world I would want a Manix 2 with FFG M390 , forest green G10 and skeletonized stainless liners.
Drool :)
