Glad your son and family are safe. You did what every father wants to be able to do, protect his family. You are a hero.
-Vinny

The things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. People are good; honor, courage, virtue mean everything; power and money mean nothing; good always triumphs over evil; true love never dies. A man should believe in those things, because they are worth believing in.

An unforgettable experience, and truly heroic actions there Dad! I hope your son makes a quick and complete recovery.

I also hope they find that cat, and destroy it, if it's not already dead.

Cheers.

jasonhobbs,

I hope that your son has a quick recovery. Good job on taking care of business. Sorry for reposting your story--I saw the video featured on CNN just a few minutes ago, and posted a link to it.

D1omedes wrote:A shocking and amazing story. Big kudos to stepping up and defending your son's life against a mountain lion. I hope that he recovers quickly and fully. I just moved to Texas (Houston) and had no idea there were mountain lions in the state. That said, my primary EDC is a Caly 3.5. I'm glad it performed when you needed it. Best wishes.
Most people don't know about Mountain Lions. They are basically everywhere even though you don't see them and authorities will have you believe differently. Even Management at this park didn't want the other guests to know about this attack. Cougars hunt at night and usually have enough game (deer, small mammals) to keep themselves fed. After killing or finding a dead animal, they drag the carcass to a hiding\feeding place and cover it up with leaves or whatever is available. They uncover and eat until everything is gone, therefore there is no proof that they were there. They stay hidden during the daylight, therefore you could have one near you and not even know it.

The problem is that you don't ever know how they will react. They usually don't attack humans unless they are hungry or are protecting their young. This one apparently was hungry.

Thanks to a brave and prepared father, this story has a happy ending. They do need to locate that take care of that cat though.

I hope your son is doing well and on his way to full recovery. Congratulations to his Pop!

About 30 years ago my wife, our two sons and I camped in the nearby campground for nine days. We hiked all around the area running into some lion tracks but luckily no lions.

Amazing story - glad your son is recovering well. I've got 3 kids (two boys and a daughter).

This will be one to talk about for years to come.

Jason - first off, I hope your boy and the rest of your family are doing well. We'll say a prayer for you tonight. Your strength and swift action are truly heroic.

I've been to Big Bend National Park numerous times and saw mountain lions twice from a distance. We always gave them a respectful distance - and they reciprocated. I'm really sorry that you and your son had this close encounter...

And on a more positive note: Welcome to the Forum! Thank you for sharing your story. When your life gets settled back down - we look forward to your continued participation!

3 things:

1. I really hope your boy is ok

2. I would never wash that knife, EVER

3. You're a badass...my hat's off to you. I bet your wife never complains about you fiddling with your knife again ;)

Jason,
My thought go out to you, your wife, and Son. I wish the best for a speedy recovery.

I can't imagine how terrifying that had to be for the three of you. Thanks to your quick thinking your son is alive today.

I've seen the story on CNN several times this morning. I know saving your son just came natural to you, but you are a Hero. Many people would not have reacted so quickly knowing just what to do with the tools on hand.
Be VERY proud, as there is nothing in life that could compare to saving your childs life.

Our prayers go out to your son and the rest of your family. Hopefully his recovery will be fast and complete. The closest I've ever come to a mountain lion was in a zoo and that was close enough.

That "muscle memory" from opening and closing your Caly certainly paid off. That you didn't have to fumble around with a basic pocket knife probably saved your son from much more serious injury.

I really can't believe some of the comments made by ignorant people on those links. That lodge had also best re-think its position. Not only on moral grounds, but they could be facing criminal charges if someone else is attacked on or near their property.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for sharing your story... Amazing...

Im happy for you guys that it ended so well. You were prepared, and did what you needed to do to help your boy. Respect, and well done!

This certainly confirms that the best knife is the one you have on you.

Jason,

As others have said, here's to hoping for a quick recovery for your son. He's also the brave one in this story and deserves some credit as well.

Also, congrats on living up to the best but hardest job in the world, being a dad and protector of your family. You're a hero to all other fathers out there.

All anti-gun/anti-knife wives should hear about this story. There's a reason we do what we do and some wives just don't get it. It's in our DNA to want to protect our family even though those odds aren't as great as they used to be.
