Now I want one of these after thinking itll be a big knife but with tons of beef behind it. Beastly. Btw, you all noticed s30v is the steel on the Manix 2 now also? Sweetness. I suppose Spyderco did this because it probably cost them less and non of their other knives are using 154 anyway.

Or theyre using it up to make way for s35VN...

AFAICT 154CM was chosen for the Manix2 because Sal got his hands on a huge pile of it (well, enough to make all the saber-ground M2's thus far) for a great price. Yes, it's a steel with a great reputation going back 40 years, and it's waaay cheaper to grind than S30V, but if they've switched the production line over I'd bet that they've used up the majority of that stockpile and the price of S30V is competitive with the cost of more 154CM.

Switching to S35VN is entirely possible, but I would imagine they'd go straight into that, unless they've got a huge stockpile of S30V to use up. (Lots of other blades to use that on, tho.) (This is, of course, pure speculation about the intricacies of Sal's master plan for keeping quality high and costs low, so take it all with a grain of salt. Sal, if I'm getting too close to the truth, please tell the ninja assasins to feed my ferret?)

I have missed the original large Manix.

I am sure I will give this one a look at some point. :)

I hope it's 5 :) . 4 is good enough though. That is an awesome price, but I'll still probably wait for a sprint to buy one.

According to the OpsFocus catalog, the blade thickness is 3mm for the Manix 2 XL.

You beat me to it.

I was hoping for 4mm and, since I already have several Manix2 sprints, the XL's increased length may not alone be compelling enough for me. Guess I gotta mull this acquisition.

it's not really much of an XL ... more like a manix2.1 :p

am i crazy for hoping the xl was gonna be more like a resilience size blade with thick steel? overkill !?! :D i still hope it will gel when i get one in my hands.. 176grams is pretty hefty i suppose ;)

I'm totally cool with 3mm...it's a knife, not a pry bar. This just means it will be that much better of a slicer!

Hope that there will be plenty sprints in the future. Another XHP would be nice. Either way, this will be my first Manix 2.

I had hoped for something a little bit more (if you'll excuse my reference to those other knives) "Vaquero Grande." The Resilience fills that hole readily enough, and someday we'll have the Szabo folder to really reset the Gonzo-quotient.

This will be a great blade for the price. But if the blade stock is really only 3mm, I'm not sure this will replace my original Manix. Still waiting for a Spyderco folder with a 4" cutting edge, FFG leaf blade, robust point and good steel from 4" stock (sorry, Resilience!).
