No, not too gruesome. It's a sort of sympathetic reaction. I've had a couple of serious knife incidents, one involving a severed radial artery. :o Sort of separately, I've had a couple of knives do unintended and unexpected wave-like openings (without injury), so I definitely empathize.

tip up carry. this wouldnt of happend.

had a leek open in my packet carried tip down, luckily it didnt cut me. have not had that issue with tip up carry.

i've had a similar incident with a crkt premonition which is tip-down only. the knife has decent in-handle retention but i think the friction across the back of the blade while pushing it into my pocket allowed the blade to come out enough for the tip to snag on the pocket material. once that tip snagged the blade came straight out n cut my leg. tiny cut that healed quickly but it sure gave me a shock! :eek:

I have seen it happen with tip up as well, that is if you don't place the spine against the outside edge of the pocket...Doc :D

i cut the crap out of my hand when my yojimbo opened up in my pocket. the blade detent on that design needed some work in my opinion.

Glad you weren't hurt too badly. This is why I'm a proponent of tip-up.

Scary and bloody, man! I used to carry my Spin on my keychain and one time I put my hand in my pocket to get some money out and felt something odd. I pulled my hand out very slowly with my keys and found my Spin halfway open. If I had pulled my hand out, I believe my finger would have been sliced pretty good. Near as I can figure, one of my keys got in the hole and yanked it open. Spin has been money clip ever since with no incident.

Seeing a big blade open like that runs chills down my spine!!

I had this happen once back in 2005 (IIRC) when I was a baseball game for one of my kids. I stuck my hand in my pocket and met the sharp point of my AFCK...I tightened up the pivot pin after that. It is not an experience you want to have twice.

Mr. Janich apparently had similar issues in mind during the design of the Yojimbo 2 with that extra pull closed detent he demonstrated during one of the demo videos.

Maybe the knife wasn't closed all the way when you put it in your pocket???

I'm sure it's possible. I can't blame the knife for this, like i said the detent is so strong i can't see how it would have come open after being clipped.

Well usually tip down is MORE safe than tip up...depending on which pocket you have your knife in. If the spine of the knife is against the side of your pocket then yeah tip up is pretty much idiot proof. But, tip down, it's not like these knives are auto openers, there's no reason the blade should come open especially with how strong the detent is on this particular model. I wouldn't let this sway your opinion of carry orientation...it was more like user error.

The good news is, i guess being that it's in the side of my palm, where it's constantly flexed when i grab stuff, it's all but healed up already. It's a little sore but a lot less than i expected. I think i got off VERY easy.

I carry mine tip up.
