With respect to all,

As regards making a drone from a live blade for training purposes, from an MBC perspective it is not a good idea. You can flatten and round the live blade with great skill, and you will end up with a dangerous training tool. The edge will always be too thin, and as it has been said several times in this thread, the thin edge will split flesh.

Done that, been there, have the scar. When training with any level of intensity, you want to use a purpose designed trainer, and if possible that trainer should be identical to, or be very close to your defensive carry knife. Injuries still happen with purpose designed trainers, but there is less chance than with a ground down drone.

I have been training in the MBC system for 11 years now, and I have been dinged, and banged, and stabbed with many types of trainers and drones, and I will not train with a partner that does not use a purpose designed trainer that is in good shape (you should always examine your trainers for burrs and other imperfections prior to training). I always have spare trainers to lend to new partners and students if they do not own an appropriate trainer.

Should Spyderco invest in making a dedicated trainer for the Yojimbo2? Oh **** yes! The personal defense market continues to grow and develop. When men and women decide to take responsibility for their personal safety they need to seek out qualified training in as many disciplines as possible, and they need appropriate tools to train safely. The Yojimbo 2 is, and will be an excellent personal defense tool, and it deserves a dedicated trainer.

My 2 cents worth.

Best,

Mike

I'd buy a Yojimbo 2 trainer without hesitation.

I am more than willing to pay the same price for the Yojimbo 2 and a trainer.

Hey Mike, thanks for taking the time to post, I know that you are busy. It's great to get a professional trainers opinion with years of experience and one who has the scars to proove it. Thanks again and Stay Safe.

I would definitely order a Yo trainer. Training with a very close replica of the knife you EDC enhances your familiarity with the knife and reduces the chances of a screw-up if you ever need to use it in an emergency.

Every Spyderco trainer I've owned has been of the same quality as its live blade counterpart. It doesn't appear to me that they compromise on quality based on the fact that the end product is going to be a trainer. I've used the same Delica trainer for the last six years. It probably has been open and closed a five thousand times, including hundreds of inertial openings, and it is still solid as a rock.

Find it heartening that there are actually more Yojimbo trainers sold on this thread than sales of just the knife, even discounting any of the "maybe"s. Looking like there's a bit of a market out there for trainers after all...

Well, if it is screwed together instead of pinned we can cut a drone blade and swap it for the live blade. Then we'll need to spray paint the whole thing red so it's obviously a trainer. Black trainers make me nervous.

On the other hand, not all of the respondents who said they would or might purchase one will (much easier to click a mouse than shell out a hundred bucks :p ), and few (if any) of the people that said they wouldn't buy one are likely to... so the profitability of such a venture seems questionable to me. Then again, as a "no" vote myself and someone who doesn't work in the cutlery industry... I'm both too uninformed to know for sure if that is the case and too disinterested to incline myself towards optimism. For the sake of all of you who would buy such a thing, I certainly hope that I'm wrong, for what it's worth :) .

My guess is Spyderco has a pretty good handle on the correct ratio of live blades to trainers that is typical for the market.
