I would be willing to bet that this thread is not going un-noticed by the folks at Spyderco. I'm wondering if the base should maybe be made of cast aluminum or titanium.
But on the other hand maybe it would be a good idea to try to come up with some type of shim insert. Or even another type of high grade polymer material that maybe wouldn't have this potential problem.
It also wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't also a new model of the Sharpmaker coming down the pipeline because the 204 has been on the market 10 years plus.
sharpmaker abs base, wear out?...
Ive had my sharpmaker for 3 weeks and my stones also fit snug when first used but now they r loose doesnt seem to effect the performance but it gives the sensatuon that the rods r gonna break or come out i jus apply slightly more pressure to ensure the rods dont move u will b the first to report if it breaks im a huge sharpmaker fan but have heard many many people question the quality of the new ones but as sayed before up a few posts sal n the guys will see this post and they arent the type of people to let a qc issue just go away dont be surprised to have sal address this issue when he sees this thread
I've been bitten for about a year now, and I haven't been the same since...My name is Allen and I'm a spyder-holic
I've noticed the rods are a little loose in their slots. Since I push against the rods while sharpening, they "lean" against the far side of the slots and it should all even itself out, imho. I take great care not to let the tip of the knife slide off the rods and I'm usually successful. However, the edge often hits the base of the SM and by now there are deep cuts in the SM base where the rods meet the base. I'll try to fix a pencil there with rubber bands to prevent that in the future. I'd be lost without my Sharpmaker. :D
