Western Slope Colorado...All the beauty..none of the traffic and big city politics

I would shoot a bit more south than Seattle and hit up Portland, OR. Big enough for there to always be something to do, great outdoors activity access with everything from ocean shores to desert to forests within a couple of hours drive, small enough to not have the problems that Seattle does with traffic and the like, great arts community, a thriving martial arts culture, ridiculously good mass transit, tons of brew-pubs, and a decent cost-of-living. If you want to dodge the taxes, just live across the river in Vancouver and get the best of both worlds of no income tax on one side and no sales tax on the other side. :cool:

uhh my state has the strongest heroin in the us. better than miami even, and that says a lot.
and i believe camdem has the most murders 3 years running at one point.

Portland is the one city wherein I could see myself living without owning a car. Powells and bicycle mania added to the above would make it perfect for me if I preferred an urban to a rural setting.

Sounds like a nice place. Is that where you live? I hope you would say yes. I'd like to picture someone doing that. I've always wanted to do that, maybe not permanently but for a very long trip.

I answered this question before and described a hobby more than a place so I guess I should have just said "the beach".

Oregon in general is great. If you want left-wing, go to the valley. If you want red-state, head east or south. Not only that, but nobody screws with your guns or your knives (autos/balis included) unless you're in Portland or Eugene. We have concealed carry, and allow all kinds of knives. Open carry is allowed as well without permit.

There's lots of good food, good culture, Chinese events, Japanese events, excellent gardens, mountains, ocean, hotsprings, fishing, hiking, shooting and camping. You can be at the ocean, on sand dunes and atop a mountain all in the same day if you play your cards right, then you can spend the evening in a lithium hot-spring if you're really smart.

The beer and the wine (Momokawa Sake included) are diverse, inexpensive and tasty. The biking is excellent. The climate never really gets too bad, just rainy. You can get just about any kind of fresh food from just about anywhere in the world if you want. Fubon/Uwajimaya have any asian foods, spices or legal medicinal herbs you would want (and I'm guessing you need some pretty strange stuff for your tinctures and wizard brews), and there is a pretty nice market in Eugene. There isn't too much machismo at the bars here either.

I moved here from Madison, Wisconistan 5 years back; and I wouldn't go back for all the knives in the SFO.

The only thing that scares the crap out of me are the immediate drop-offs from the shoulderless roads into mountain streams.

ketchikan, or somewhere else in southeast alaska. everyone is super friendly, low crime, amazing fishing (salmon + halibut), and very knife/gun-friendly. islands, mountains, and moderate temperatures... usually 30-70 degrees. :D

If I could talk the wife into it, I'd move to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Beautiful, with 4 seasons and a decent climate.

I lived in Prescott, AZ for 3 years, I probably would have stayed, but I didn't want to raise kids with the available schools. Nobody there is "normal." Cowboys, indians, bikers, crystal huggin' hippies. Fantastic climate, beautiful scenery.

If you need a little urban, I have family in Boise, Idaho. Jobs are a little tough right now, but access to some of the best outdoors activities in the country from skiing to kayaking.

Richmond, VA. Everything you want from a big city, in a small city. Houses are affordable right now. Great affordable eating. Very friendly town where you can have a decent conversation with a complete stranger over a cup of coffee. Great time to buy real estate there right now. Gun friendly (my liberal friends there carry). Now also home to the largest university in VA, VCU. A stunningly beautiful boulder strewn river runs right through the city.
If my family didn't live there, I would.

It's my plan starting in August of 2017 when my wife reaches retirement age. But if things keep going downhill in the People's Republic of NY I may do it sooner and just send her a plane ticket to catch up with me wherever I happen to be in August of 2017 :) .

It can be a bit dangerous depending on where you go and when you go there is a substantial gangsta' element--hence the gun totin' liberal comment I made. On the other hand, Doc might enjoy that. :

definitely southeast alaska. you can't get more knife/gun friendly. great hunting and AMAZING fishing opportunities, mountains, islands, ocean, temperature 30-70 degrees... :D

I can help you out. The reason you would like to live there is the ladies there have such wonderful minds. :D

I meant that as a joke of course. I don't want to insinuate that just because the are beautiful they are not intellegent. The joke is that no matter how smart they are I don't think you care! :D :D Of course, I'm above all that. :rolleyes:
