I got my first Spydie with this in mind. I wear dress pants every day to work. So, my first was the Caly 3, and it fits the bill perfectly. Then I got the "fever" and have bought another 39 Spydies in less than a year.

Others that I believe work well with dress pants are:

Sage 1
Sage 2
Perrin PPT (carries even deeper than the wire clips).

Caly 3/3.5 no doubt, very thin so doesn't imprint, deep carry and low visibility clip, most people won't even notice.

Regard lock vs. non-lock, it may make a difference in our mind, but to most people it's still a thing with blade comes out, so I highly doubt they'll care if it's a UKPK or a caly/delica.

If you've got a 3" leaf blade out, a non-trivial number of people will wonder why you couldn't just make do with a keychain SAK, or just not have a knife at all. They will not consider, on any level, whether your knife is actually dangerous.

I think that carbon fiber says "business class" best. My first recommendation would be the Stretch CF - seriously thin with a great 3.5" ZDP-189 blade. Second choice as a useful "gentleman's" knife would be the Bob Terzuola with its shorter 3" S30v bade. The upcoming Chaparral would also be a nice consideration as well when it becomes available.

When I want 'classy' I always choose a Volpe. Mirror polished clip and edges, offset with olive-wood scales does it for me every time.

I wouldn't necessarily write off G10 scales on the Caly 3.5 because they might be a little hard on dress pants. You could either not use the clip or could smooth/buff it out a little under the clip area with a Dremel type tool so it would reduce the friction. And even with its G10 scales, it's still an elegant little knife but one that can easily step up and handle some fairly heavy duty cutting jobs, if that matters. Every time I open the Caly 3.5, I just marvel at how much blade was fit into that compact handle (as well as at the amazing ergonomics and super thin grind that slices like a laser but is still quite sturdy).

I would have to to say a black micarta Persian. That knife just screams, "Style and substance" to me for some reason. A knife as refined-looking as that probably wouldn't raise any eyebrows except those of envy if it proved necessary to use it for something. :cool:

Kopas, Kiwis and Crickets have worked for me these past ten years.

I recommend a Dragonfly 2. It has a good, useful cutting blade and is so light that you'll barely know it's there. The steel is VG-10, and it's a lockback instead of a linerlock. All your bases are covered. :)

The caly 3 is a great but i like the etched Spin for a business suit. It is very light and will not upset the sheeply coworker.

The ZDP-189 Caly III with CF handles makes for the perfect EDC knife for dress pants. I carried one daily for three years. The CF handles won't shread dress pants like G-10 does and the wire clip allows for discret carry.

The Shabaria is pretty nice for dress pants. It's a little large for a 'gentleman's knife,' but the clip is positioned nicely for discreet carry and it looks nice too (with the gold embossed spider on the clip).

I work in office, so often ask myself this question. I usually wear nice business casual three days a week and go with CF Caly 3 or Lum CF as the largest blades. Other dress knives are: Cat, Balance, Kopa pearl abalone. the Kopa I consider the dressiest of them all. The stainless bolsters and cool pearl and abalone I wore that to nice diner last night.

Get a Kopa. Or a Balance.

Failing that, the Vesuvius suggested by Doc or the Centofante suggested by Skatenut.

G10 IS hard on pocket fabric. Stainless scales are heavy.

I wear a suit every day to work. Quite frequently I opt for my clipless Dragonfly2 FRN. It is lightweight enough that it doesn't imprint on my pocket - but it has enough blade to do some serious cutting.

Plus, it is darned cute!
