It's called a "fuller" and it primarily reduces the weight of the blade without weakening it. Kind of like a curved I-beam. Some people call it a "blood groove" but I believe this is pop-culture non-sense.

The Tuff looks amazing. I'm also looking forward to the SS Balance. Since it will be thinner than its CF counterpart I think it will be a great IWB knife :cool:

My wallet is shedding tears as I look at these videos more and more. Time to start putting in more overtime I guess...

I'm disappointed that the Szabo is going to be Carbon Fiber instead of G-10 like the proto. Its going to drive that knife right out of my affordability range...

I am not a big fan of the CF balance, just because of the price on it so i hope the SS version is a little more affordable..

Wow thanks for finding and posting that glimpse of the Tuff. Like all Schempp's it's a striking knife. Sort of like simplified, beefed up Barong. But yeah .... it looks crazy expensive. SS balance looks cute and affordable though.

Looking closely at the Tuff in the video it is S30V made in Taiwan. So here is to hoping its around $150 on the streets. I can't get a good look at the Szabo but here is to hoping it is made in Taiwan also.

Also does anyone know what the final specs of the Szabo are?

the tuff looks like a rock salt folder. the stainless steel balance looks like a cool knife--i like that spyderco makes affordable versions of their high end knives.

I thought it was going to be 3V. But if that's all good if it makes price point lower.

Well I've been hankering for a snippet of the elusive Tuff for what seems like forever now. That pic & vid has my mouth watering. I'm assuming / hoping the S30v is just being used for the production prototype. I don't care how long it takes to perfect the production process etc. As long as uses cpm3V I'll wait. If this does make it into the wild with an integral compression lock I'll be overjoyed!

Schempp may very well be my favorite production knife designer. I hope the Tuff's locking mechanism wasn't changed from an integral compression lock to a Chris Reeve integral frame lock because of the integral compression lock's performance. I would be greatly saddened to find that the integral compression had a tendency to malfunction. The curvy lines of the integral compression lock seem to better compliment the shape of the knife. As where with the frame lock which has straight lines and sharp curves, which are(Imho) unfitting of such a curvy knife.


I look forward to and hope to purchase both of the knives mentioned in the title of this thread. Regardless of their outcome.
