I had a similar situation happaen to me. The cop saw an Endura I had and he ordered me to surrender it to him(with lust in his eyes). But before I gave it up, I jammed the blade in the crack/space in the concrete and SNAPPED the blade, then handed it to him. He look at me like I did something sick to a six year old. he threw the Endura down on the street, stormed into his car, and sped off!!!

I thought about reporting him to his superiors. But no, He was punished enough!!!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

If you closely read the text of the MA law, the 1.5" blade length limit applies only to automatic knives ("switch knife" ). Here is the new Boston law that caught out CDSniper:

CITY OF BOSTON

Be it ordained by the City Council of Boston, as follows:
That CBC, Ordinances, Chapter 16 be amended by inserting the following new language:

16-45 PROHIBITING THE CARRYING OF KNIVES OR
SIMILAR WEAPONS

16-45.1 Carrying of Weapons Prohibited. No person, except as provided by law, shall carry on his person, or carry under his control in a vehicle, any knife having any type of blade in excess of two and one-half (2 1/2"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> inches, (except when actually engaged in hunting or fishing or [delete … in going directly to and/or returning directly from such activities, or any employment which requires the use of any type of knife), … end delete] any employment, trade or lawful recreational or culinary activity which customarily involves the carrying or use of any type of knife, or (b) in going directly to and/or returning directly from such activities, or (c) if the knife is being transported directly to or from a place of purchase, sharpening, or repair, and if packaged in such a manner as not to allow easy access to the knife while it is being transported), ice picks, dirks or similar weapons that are likely to penetrate through police officer's ballistic vests, or other object or tool so redesigned, fashioned, prepared or treated that the same may be used to inflict bodily harm or injury to another.

Ok, so I can have a knife thats 2 1/2 in long? Whats the best Spyderco that I can legally have?

Also is it 2.5 in Length Blade OR Length Cutting Edge?

That is exactly the reason I have my Name etched on the blade of my Miltary. Makes it less likely to be taken for personal use.

One option is the salsa. Carlos did an excellent review and as he said he was in Boston. I've been carrying a Ti for a couple months now. PE and not as threatening. Also it sounds as if the jester would fit well within the 'law' for you.

Big-target, WOW! You are a true Samurai!! It reminds me of that samurai movie with Christopher Lambert, who is caught in a Smaurai versus Ninja clans battle. After one bloody fight in a train, police ask for the japanese hero's sword for evidence, when he says something like: "No one handles my 'katana' [SNAP], now you may take it for evidence!". Very cool action you did with your Endura. I would have liked to see the cop's face! I have to remember this if I ever run into the same problem.

Ignorance of the law is indeed no defense, but propriety definitely is. Simply use your knife when needed, and don't play with it when the propriety of such is questionable.

As for breaking the knife, that's a touchy enough action that I would just surrender the knife. With some cops, such an action may be seen as "tampering with evidence", which is to be avoided.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

As Chris said, I used Salsas as my everday carry knives during my last few months in Boston. It is the most knife you can carry there without meeting one of the special criteria.

Dragonfly????

Okay. Let's see.

First of all: you can HAVE any knife that you want. Buy yourself a Civilian if you like. But you'd need to keep it in your house, preferably in a case or on a collector's stand or something.

If you want to carry a knife around, it needs to have a blade length of below 2.5". So a Dragonfly would be fine.

If you're carrying a knife around for personal protection, be it a Dragonfly or a Ladybug, you're screwed. You're not carrying a knife for personal protection; you're carrying it so you can open your mail, and you can peel the orange you're going to have for lunch, etc.

I'd suggest an SS Dragonfly or a Cricket, but I don't have any experience with the Salsa.

You might be able to get away with something with a longer blade if you used it for work, or if you're coming to or from camping, etc. I strongly suggest that you don't even try.

An FRN Dragonfly SE is my EDC. I love it!

That sucks that you lost your knife, the lum tanto folder is cool. Some words about self defense: number one- never tell a cop you use a knife for defense, number two- even if you plan on it, be sure as **** you know how to use it, that means train, number three- BE CAREFUL.
