How do you convince your girlfriend to carry a Spydie?!?

You made your case, she responded, drive on, no one likes to be told what to think or what to do, or what to carry.

My wife used to borrow my Victorinox key chain knife until she found the Miss Army Kit knife. Lets just say, "It nothing remotely like a Spyderco." but it is functional and she picked it out. She has mentioned it is often borrowed by the women she works with, she is an RN. OTOH, she is very picky about her kitchen knives, mostly J A Henkels we bought before we got married, still in use forty years later.

I was lucky that my girlfriend liked knives right from the start. I got her a Salt Ladybug, and that led to a pink Native. Then when the FFG Delicas came out, I got her a green and blue one. She really loves the blue one. She was gifted a white Dragonfly by a buddy of mine, and then I got her a serrated black Dragonfly to go with it. She really likes them serrated... yikes!

When I first started buying :spyder: 's my wife was a definite NKP. Now she accepts and sometimes even appreciates my hobby/obsession??? :D Who else has knife that can easily take off the nasty ends of corn cobs (Aqua Salt SE)?

I got her to carry a small Victorinox on her keychain and she's used the purple Delica I gave her. I think my philosophy with my wife is to avoid pressuring her. Over time she's getting more and more used to having very sharp knives around. She'll take it at her own pace. I love the girl very much too :) :)

Some are thinking that I am somehow trying to FORCE her to carry one, when nothing is further from the truth. I made a joke about duct-taping one on her, but that was very much just a joke. I do not try to force her to carry one or somehow "force" her to be interested in my hobbies.

I suppose I should have been more specific in the beginning of this thread, but the reason I started this thread is to see what you guys have done to either get your girlfriends/significant others to I guess "see the way of the Spydie," (without any coersion), just maybe through a specific Spydie you have bought them, maybe a class you have gotten them to take, or maybe certain philosophical reasonings you have used to get them to understand. Again, I am not attempting to pressure, force, or otherwise make her carry one.

For me and my wife slower is better.

Bottom line is we all we want is our loved ones to feel secure, and safe. Every couple and relationship is completely different. We're all good :)

No worries, dbcad. I just didn't want to give the impression she was being forced to carry a Spydie- which would undoubtedly have the exact opposite effect. Didn't mean to sound upset or anything in the last post, but I just wanted to get that out there to avoid the confusion. But I guess it might help if I were more specific in my posts in the first place.

Thanks for all the help. Seeing if she wants to do an SD class sounds like a great idea. I guess until then the Bug will be rockin her keychain, or maybe a SAK in the future.

That sounds good, but... I taught my wife how to double action shoot a Detective Special. She is very easy going, but there are those human silhouette targets with the raged centers I have to think about. :eek:

It sounds like you're already doing all you can do.

Great idea! I'm already planning on getting her the Byrd Kitchen knives when they come out as she has complained a few times about our current Walmart knife setup.

I bought my wife an etched Cricket. She loves it and keeps it in a special drawer in her dresser. Then i got her the tattoo Dragonfly. It is still in its box and in the same drawer. Finally, I gave her a black blade Native. Now that one gets carried around when we have a work day at her folks' ranch.

Seems about right to me - other than my current EDC the rest of my knives live in their boxes in a special drawer.

And in our situation, the self defense motivation doesn't apply, since handguns are part of the daily lifestyle around home and vehicle.

I never try to convince my wife to carry Spyderco. I just put a Ladybug on her key-chain and she started to use it.

i started her with a Bug for a necklace. then got her a GRasshopper, she started to use it.....now, well now she carries a Pink IZULA every day :P

My wife took my MOP/Abalone Kiwi. I replaced it with a MOP/Jet Kiwi. My daughter, who usually gives me trouble about all my knives, took one look and wanted it. So I now carry a CF Kiwi.

If it's cute or beautiful in their eyes you have a conversion. Now that they carry them, they are beginning to appreciate their utility.

Perhaps you could tie the knots on the grocery bags extra tight or point out little strings hanging off of her clothes. Maybe if you (with tact and subtlety) point out the things you would cut if you were her she might start wanting to do it herself. Nowadays it seems like anything that makes a woman feel empowered is very eagerly welcomed. You DO, however, have to make it look like it was her idea all along and never take any credit should she decide to carry. That worked at my house.

Be careful of what you wish for....my wife seems to think that if she likes my Spyderco and it fits her hand...well then it's hers....Thank the lord I have enough knives that I won't miss a few....Thank the lord that she likes to edc push daggers....was just a few weeks ago she almost took one of my Ronins and my Caly Jr.ZDP...I bought her two Orchid plants and she left them alone...LOL, now she has her eyes on one of my RATS...I see the purchase of another Orchid plant in the very near future....LOL.....Doc :D
