I've carried a knife since I was 7 the first being a boy scout knife. It has been an indispensable tool through the years. Anything can become a weapon in the hands of a motivated person but in the hands of the rest of us, it's a valuable tool. Yes I have given myself accidental cuts quite often when I was 7 and even today at the age of 32 but it sure teaches you quick to respect it.
Hats off to that young lad, that makes me VERY happy to see the youth of today learning to admire, use and respect blades given todays politically correct and over protective society. He is much further along than I was at that age when it comes to quality and knowledge!

Kids with knives
I am surprised with the intelligent and measured response to my post. Am surprised my friend VampireW has not gone postal. Still worried about kids.
Keep an eye on those little ones.
BTW the Tenacios is certainly one cool folder. Still looking for the new fly.
MountainMan, my fav FB is the Street Beat also.

I have been carrying knives ever since I can remember. (can't quite put my finger on the exact age when I got my first one) My dad gave me little swiss army knives and an Old timer that i still have today. I got my first larger folder (gerber paraframe) for christmas when I was 12. I soon after bought a Kershaw "blackout" then a Benchmade camo handled black bladed griptilian, and a Cold steel Prolite. My knife buying slowed down in high school although I carried those knives that I had relentlessly. I am now a sophomore in college and have begun buying knives once again. Only this time it was a friend who converted me into a Spydie nut :D After I bought my tasman (which was intended to be solely a lake knife) I liked it so much I decided to look more into Spyderco and have been hooked ever since!!!!! :D
As for the kid in the video, he is lucky to be starting so young and I enjoyed his review. He just needs to clean his knives and take better care of them
lol

I know I have some leeway in calling myself a collector, have a good collection of slipjoints dating back to the 30s on a couple (and worth some decent coin). Hasn't stopped me from using some of those over the years... had an appreciation for a well done slipjoint LONG before I knew knives could lock :p
I've only posted a couple rants on here in the long time I've been on here, and those get cleaned up before posting. Trust me you don't want to see the unedited version.
You'll find that most of the people here on the spydie forum do quite well containing themselves and any issues that do come up. Only seen a couple times when a mod had to step in (besides spam control). Whereas some forums seem to pride themselves on post counts, it's the quality that matters and not the quantity... leading to intelligent discussions on even touchy subjects. There's a reason I cut my forum surfing down to 2.

Why do people worry more if you argue with your voices than if you just talk with them? What about if you lose those arguements?
Slowly going crazy at work... they found a way to make the voices work too.

I gotta give props to the kid. He's trying and obviously doing something he likes. As long as he keeps using common sense he'll be OK. Notice he said the Kershaw had blood on it from him cutting himself. You know how to not cut yourself? You cut yourself on accident a bunch of times and then you get better at not cutting yourself. Even then you still do.
Always good to see young guys (I'm only 36) getting into knives. I want them to be around much longer than me and also be acceptable to carry.

I started carrying a little slip joint my Dad gave me when I was 7, and I never managed to cut myself with it. By the time I was 14, I was using an 8 inch dive knife whenever I went scuba diving. No problems. The world is full of sharp edges and things that burn and hurt, that's how kids learn about their environment and how to be careful when they interact with it. I did way more damage to myself falling off my skateboard or my bicycle than I ever did to myself with a knife. :)
all through the summer before sixth grade straight thru to 7th i carried a Vic Tinker everywhere, then during 7th grade a teacher gave me a kershaw =) ive been hooked ever since, bought my first official spydie at 14

O.K. I have to admit that although I was taught correct technique, I still cut myself every once in a while. I distinctly remember sharpening a hatchet with a round official Boy Scout stone and letting my pinkie finger hang over the edge of the stone. The scar is still visible. Point is accidents happen. You survive them and learn from them. So many parents today seem so utterly scared to death to let their kids get hurt that they don't let them experience LIFE.
+1. I made a nice clean slice through my thumb's fingerprint when I was about 12 with a SAK. The flesh opened like a book lol. That first wound gave me the confidence to handle knives and not be afraid of getting cut.freeman7 wrote:O.K.
