I believe it's called a sharpening notch. To aid in easier sharpening of the blade. You see it alot on Swiss Army Knives (SAKs). :)

"Easier to sharpen?" The only way I can think of is that you won't have a dead spot as opposed to knives where the edge goes all the way to the kick. The sharpmaker rods, for example, have too big a radius on the corners to be able to get all the way at the edge at the kick, so I have a dead dull spot there.

I understand what you mean. That dead spot is eliminated with the notch. That was what I meant by easier to sharpen. So you don't have to mark up the ricasso when you sharpen your blade.

Thanks for the explanation.

I find knives with that notch make it easy to accidentally hurt yourself if you aren't paying close attention to what you are doing, it provides a sharp hook that can nip you. It hasn't happened more then a couple times to me, but I have not had problems like that with blades that don't have that notch.
