I think many folks do not realize the difference between a folder and a fixed. A fixed blade is always faster and more sure than a folder. Of course if it is not burried under layers of clothes and has a good carry system. Do not get me wrong a good folder like the ones you mentioned are a plus, but a fast little blade like the Ronin, Streetbeat etc are just sooo fast into deployment with one less movement. Take care and hopefully you will experience the positives of the compact fixed blade when you get it. ;)

I was under the impression that the designer of both the Ronin/Yojimbo was Michael Janich (only)
I think Mr. Janich was the driving force behind both designs. As I understand the story, he went to Mike Snody to work out the prototypes. That is why you will see them on Mike Snody's page, his custom versions displayed there. How much Mike Snody input went into the designs, I am not in a position to say.

But,

in my simple non-analytical...

I would surmise that Snody had more to do with the blades than Janich. Cause....

I always thought that Janich was a Fighter/teacher/SD guy... not necessarily a knife maker. Am i wrong  ????

and Look at BM's line of Snodys....
They look a heck of allot like the Yo and the Ronin.
Especially look at the Gravitator and the Investigater... Look anything like the Yo and the Ronin respectively?

I don't care which wharnie or which company makes one...all I can tell you is from my testing and experience no other wharncliffe knife cuts and performs like the Yo and Ronin...it's all about blade geometry...vary it slightly and all things change....Doc :D

No, Janich is not a knifemaker, however he is a knife designer.

The Gravitator and Instigator came after the work on the Ronin and Yojimbo. The design influences trace themselves in that regard. As I understand, Michael Janich came to Mike Snody with the concepts and they worked them out into live blades.

That being said... Snody's stuff (both current and past) simply rocks. Get it where you can. He mostly does fixed blade stuff today. He is also one cool character.

I agree Snody's stuff simply Rocks, and he was smart enough to realize what MJ really had design wise...he wasn't at first...till he cut himself with the prototype
lying on his work bench....deep cuts kinda makes a believer out of almost anybody!...The knife world was a little slow on picking up on the fact that the Yo and Ronin were superb examples of superior SD knives....but the word is now out...and those in the know as well as those who were not...now know!....Pick one up...you won't be disappointed...Doc :D

The Ronin works well for me in Michael Janich's Filipino grip, but also works superbly in a plain hammer grip or "icepick" grip, blade forward or rearward, edge in or edge out. No other blade I have handled does all of that as well as the Ronin. Yes, there are other blades better for me in certain grips than the Ronin, but none work as well in all five grips. I will never catch up with the Doctor, but have managed to accumulate six Ronins. If Spyderco did another run of them, I would be good for at least two more.
Civilians, Dodo, Guntings, Mili, P'kal, Rescues, Ronins, Temperance, others...
