There are some knives I avoid for a reason, like too-high-price or a right-hand-only clip or some feature I don't like; but I know exactly what you mean about not ever getting around to checking out a knife that you might like, if given the chance.

For me, it would be the Ocelot, Manix, byrd Flight, & Lava. Those look like knives that would work for me, but I haven't got around to checking them out yet. Too many knives, too little time.

Of the handful of Spydies I have, I really like the leaf shape, flat ground Manixes and the Li'l Temp the best, followed by the Native III. I guess I eschew the serrated edge blade since, since I began my knife quest some 30 years ago, I've had only 3 serrated edge blades and two of them are with soldiers/marines in Iraq.

I also disdain blades coated with tactical spoooge that conceals a lack of decent blade finish and hides rust. Fortunately, Spyderco doesn't do much of that.

I avoid all non-Spyderco knives.

That would be a tough question for me to answer honestly.
I would say I tend to ignore the stainless handle offerings...that I have a dozen of...
I tend to ignore fixed blades...but I ordered two Mules yesterday...
I tend to ignore framelocks...aside from my Spin...and half a dozen others from different makers...
I tend to ignore the H1 series...aside from my Pacific Salt...
I would be on firmer ground saying I tend to ignore the hawkbills. I have tried them in the past and found them nearly worthless for the things I do most. The Civilian has no appeal to me, since I carry knives as tools, not weapons. Aside from that, I can't say I really ignore anything.

I avoid all plain edged or combo edged blades with less than 60% serrations because I don't like them ;)

All fixed blades because I'm not allowed carry them over here and because of the reason above(with the exeption of the Temperance maybe but that knife is too big :D )

I would say that the handles cause me to ignore certain knives more than the blade shape or size. Black G-10, black FRN, and smooth stainless tend to pass under my radar, as do those with many holes, slots, or other pocket lint catchers. I also shy away from knives with an overly "tactical" look (camo or black blades).

That being said, a blackened S30V blade/black G-10 Yojimbo would grab my eye (and my wallet) in a heartbeat. ;)

Let's see...I find that knives that I take a pass on are 'gentleman' folders such as the Kiwi; blades that have a fancy flourish such as the Chinook, Persian, Captain and Kris; and knives that are small, such as the Spin, Cricket, et all. In addition, I will usually avoid serrations.

Even though I had a FRN Endura, I still ignored the SS Endura for years thinking it was too cheap and inferior to the other Spydies, that I had "moved on" from the work-a-day models by carrying a S30V Millie.

I was 2 1/2 years into EDCing the Millie when I got a SS E2 (AUS-6) as a present. It took all of 3 minutes to change my mind and start EDCing the E2. The SS E4 came out a bit after that so I moved back to my favorite steel, VG-10. Now I am anxiously waiting for the G-10 E4 for the G-10, VG-10, FFG, adjustability, and all the Endura qualities. The G-10 E4 will still have to prove itself, but on paper it looks like as close to perfect as anything out there.

I just don't get into stainless steel as a handle material, so I pretty much ignore those variations. I've got Delicas and Enduras, just not the stainless handled models.

I don't have much call for a fixed blade in my work or hobbies, so I spend my money on more folders.

Don't really like hawkbills too much...same thing as fixed blades, just don't have much call for them.

I force myself to ignore the Kiwi, otherwise I would go broke buying all the variations.

I'm going to buy an Assist to put in my car someday, other than that I ignore the Rescue style knives.

Lastly, I ignore the non-locking Spydies.

Ignore/avoid. Anything without at least a few teeth. Anything with metal handles and most pinned handles. Anything that can't be Spyder Dropped. Anything where I am expected to hold onto the bottom of the blade (via a finger choil). Anything with flared corners on the handles. They have to be able to ride deep in the pocket or be pulled out without hang-ups. Keep em light. Remember "HSLD".

That's it for me as well...a mental filter, call it cutting down the territory to a manageable size, if you will...

I like reading how many who've posted have these very specific, detailed characteristics--with dimensions!--of what they do or do not like in a knife...puts an interesting perspective on things... :)

...after I wrote this thread I thought that by seeing what others ignore...maybe it'll introduce some of us to knives we've never thought we'd look into in a million years...I know it has me...it's kind of like a game! :D

as much as i like :spyder: (and i do :) ), there are some knives in the range that i just have no interest in owning. and it's not because they're *bad* knives, because i don't think spyderco makes anything that's not *good* (talking about materials and quality of production).

there's no rule to it though - if i like the look of a knife, then i'd like it in my collection. if i don't like the look of it, no matter how good it is, i don't *want* it.

most of my collection is *never* used. i just take them out from time to time to play with. i have the UKPK for an EDC.

i think i have all the knives that i want (OK there are a few i'd like - like the original R SE to go with the PE i have), but i can live without them. these last few are now prohibitively expensive. i've built up my collection slowly over the last 15 years or so.

the last new additions i got were when the UKPK came out. most of the new range just don't *do it* for me (although i have not seen the 2008 range) - not like the older models, and i'm not sure why.

but i am very happy with my collection (although it pales when compared to those of many on here :) ).

These days I generally ignore hawkbills, pure MBC designs and blades longer than 3 inches.

I have been in the military for a while and prefer the professional models like the Police, Military and the Endura. I also like some of the bigger models like the Manix, ATR, and the Chinook ( the Chinook which I do not own). I don't ignore everything else, but I don't linger on them either...

I´m allergic to designs without kick/choil/too less guard function for my taste like Viele II, Walker, Terzuola, Lum Chinese, Centofante, Jess Horn, Goddard, Volpe, Tenacious. My fingers are too precious to risk them for a tad longer cutting edge or a perhaps cleaner look.

We need locking :spyder: folders, at least a D4, with very small :spyder:holes (no one-hand function, only trademark) for legal carry in Germany!

If I could only keep one of all my knives, it probably would be a D4.

Can this be extended to knives we own but are unhappy with?

The Volpe drives me nuts: The handle is a little on the uncomfortable/slender side and the lack of jimping on the framelock makes it a pain to close.

...the problem however is that the blade itself is just plain perfect.
