Metal cutting can be highly random due to method as a little twisting in the cut can chip an edge. You can cut a piece of wire ten times and get no damage and then significant damage on the next. I would not be concerned with visible chipping just from one cut. Since the edge is chipped use it to to some scrap cable 10-20 times and see what happens. If it continues to happen then you know there is a problem with the existing edge, then you sharpen and repeat it to see if that fixed it. It is a knife, not a rose, they only improve with use as you get more familiar with them.
