I am fourteen so a lot of adults make comments about me having knives because I am young and basically to them any knife no matter what size looks "vicious and threatening" even more so if the knife is serrated, i just say "oh well, if i was going to use it for a bad purpose i would have bought a 5 dollar pair of scissors.."

It's ironic sometimes - the knives that get all the attention - I was working with a Doctor friend of mine one night - driving him between house calls - and got the "surely that can't be legal?" comment from him - regarding my Rescue to open a package - the knife descriped by Spyderco as the blade you have when you want to cut something not someone.

You get used to it! I work 'friend' wanted to use a knife to cut some card. Now I thought do I give her the Military in my coat pocket or the Camillus 154CM EDC with my key chain? I gave her that. To ahem 'cut' a long story short the knife worked amazingly well and she commented about three times that she did not like knives and that it looked like it could kill someone. Ah and the 'killer' comment ;-) Why carry a knife like that? Because it comes in handy like today! Does it have to be so sharp though? What can you say to that? :-(

I got different reaction from people under different circumstances.

Cops or security guards tended to be very curious or overreacted when I surrender my knife for keeping when I go to some Government or public function, where lots of politicans and biz fat cats are attending. From their looks I always thought I would never get my knife back.

Colleagues and friend are starting to get use to my using my knife to open mail, cutting open sandwich bags etc. Last week a colleague was having her birthday and my knife ended up cutting her cake in the office. a lot of cleaning afterwards, ****.

Just to add that only take it out when you are confident that you won't draw too much attention. I never tried to draw it from my pocket and try to flash it around. I think being low profile about it is the key.

at my age, people go a little crazy when they see my merlin or my endura with me, but thats probably due to shape and size, and because they go EVERYWHERE with me... in my opinion, its all about the responsibility of the person.... i never delideratly flash them around...

it all depends on the person that sees you.. if the person is more mature, they will respect the fact that you carry a tool/weapon. if the person can judge that you are a responsible blade owner, they will most likley leave you to yourself... but if you are alwaways flashing your knife around just for the heck of it... then the wrong image will be portrayed... see, the fear is in the eye of the beholder.

My thought on dealing with the irrational responses of the ignorant (those guilty of cognizantly ignoring logic and reality), or the "just plain ol' stoopid" kind o’folks, is simply "indifference". There is nothing you can say to someone who uses psitticism inspired rhetoric and sophistry as a proxy default to rational thinking. Then again you just might try using sarcasm and or derisive condescension; though I don’t see the good it will do, they’re probably much too stupid to understand it.

In '93 I was given a delica spyderedge frn and I've had it on my person pretty much everywhere except in bed or in the shower. I end up using it for something pretty much every day - it's automatic. So I don't think about it when I open it in front of a stranger or the uninitiated. I ALWAYS get a reaction... usually a horrified "oh my god...you carry knife".
I'm a woman, the blade is serrated. i think it's an unexpected juxtaposition.
But once people see how useful it is, I often hear a hopeful "hey, do you have your knife on you?"
Bad news... the knife went missing last week. (and boy do I feel naked without it.)
Good news... now I get to shop for another.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

When you deploy one of your folding knives, do so casually, without any fancy moves. Even if the knife opens easily or you can flick it open with one hand, always use both hands. I also try to carry more than one blade, and I use the smallest one possible for the task. If you're opening your office mail, use your Cricket, not the folding axe you keep in your briefcase!

Earthworm. I'm a student nurse working on my BSN and then I'm off for my MSN. It's funny how people don't realize how useful a knife is in a healthcare setting. I have carried a fully serrated Delica and an Emerson mini CQC7B while on the floor. Both are valuable tools. I just carry them underneath my scrub top. Like Colinz said,"Out of sight, out of mind". It's sad that it has to be like that though.

not much, people think that because i'm from texas and we all carry knives, that it is no big deal. if i'm not carring a knife now that's a big deal. my SAK is used by everybody all the time.

People's Potential reaction is the main reason I got my cricket (don't know how I got along w/o it!). My current carry theory is similar to the "continuum of force": carry both my Cricket and G-10 Police, using whichever is better for the task, and who is nearby.

OK, I might as well throw my 2 cents in!

I occasionally get the same dirty looks and snide comments like the rest of you faithful knife carriers. However, I have to cool my temper and remember that this is a still a free Nation, [ at least, it was the last time I checked....] and I enjoy my knives, so they can go their way and I'll go mine. On a daily bases, I normally carry:

Ladybug
Spydercard
Swiss-tech Utilikey
Leatherman Micra
Buck Oddessy PE

Somedays I carry more, some less. It depends on what's going on. Hey, I don't flaunt my knives, so they don't have to flaunt their opinions!!
