I'm surprised no one mentioned a double barrel side by side, wih 18-20 inch barrels. Like a Rossi coach gun. Yes, only 2 shots but here are the advantages:
Lighter
Won't jam
Quick follow up shot
Can give both barrels if needed.
Yes, I'm low-tech. I carry revolvers instead of automatics so that'll tell you something. I like my firearms to go bang, guaranteed.

Well the Mossberg 590 came with a bayonet lug....don't know if that is the one you were thinking about.

ya know, I've never shot one, so I didn't think about it, but in a self-defense situation, that wouldn't be a bad thing to have. I mean, if you don't hit the offender in two shots(much less one) then you've got some problems! Over-under or side by side would do just fine. Infact, they are making a comeback from what I've heard "around the campfire".

I want absolute reliability, so I will steer away from the Mossberg. I am now looking into the Remingtons and Nova's.
Could somebody explain choke to me?

Think of it as a narrowing of the barrel just before the shot leaves the business end of the barrel. It chokes down on the shot making it stay closer together for longer. This increases range. A non-choked barrel is pretty worthless beyond about 50 yards. Different chokes for different applications.

Ah Remington vs. Mossberg is like .45 vs. 9mm.

I preferr an over/under double barrel. I got a Bereta Ultralight last year and love it. Its got a 24"barrel kinda short for trap and skeet but its the size I have shot for many year so Im quite used to it. Great field gun and for a 12ga. its very light.. less than 6lbs.
