Hey Loki

I look foward to that day, I hope its not in the too near future though.

Loki, do you speak Flemish or French or both? I mean ethnic background, I find Belgium interesting in the fact two distinct cultures make up a distinct country.

Flemish, not French! :D Belgium is an artificial country formed by a part of the Netherlands and a part of France in 1830, after a "revolution" supported by the French, to form a buffer between France and the Netherlands. There is a fracture line in Belgium formed by language, Flemisch wich is Dutch a "Germanic" language and the Wallons who speak French because the Roman Empire was stopped by wild hordes of German tribes on the that specific language barrier!
So they created a country that is formed by two different cultures, wich makes Belgium a very difficult country to manage. There are about 6 million Flemish people in Belgium and 4 million Wallons. The Flemish part has to pump billions of Euro's every year in the Wallon part of Belgium. Not only do we pay their social security and there massive unemployment but every time the Belgium goverment gives money to a project in the Flemish region (harbor, roads etc) they have to pay the same amount to the Wallon part of Belgium wich they spend on useless very expensive projects.
We have 5 different governements in Belgium, a Belgium governement, a Flemish one, a Wallon one, and because we stole a part of Germany after WWI as compensation for the damage done, a small German speaking governement and a Brussels governement.
Brussels, wich is located in the Flemish part, has a own governement because the Wallons won't allow it to be part of the Flemish part of Belgium. To give u an example: We have a big parcel firm in Belgium (DHL), but the Wallons decided that their planes could only fly over the Flemish part during the night! Because the Wallons wouldn't allow 5 planes to fly over their region they boycoted the firm, so they decided to leave Belgium and move to another country. The result was that a lot of people in the Flemish part are going to lose their job! By these troubles the largest political formation in the Flemish part is the right wing, nationalist Vlaams Blok.
So the central Belgium and Wallon governement decided to form a "cordon sanitair" around the Vlaams Blok, so they can't govern the Flemish part although they represent the most voters in Belgium! A lot of people in the Flemish part are getting very tired by all these "banana republic" decisions and there are more and more people in the Flemish part who want to seperate from the central Belgium governement. This would mean that the income of a typical Flemish family would raise by about 250 $ per month, just because they wouldn't have to pay for the Wallon part. Of course the Wallon part is not pleased with these ideas because it would mean that they would be broke in about a week.
Not only is it a language problem but also a "tribal" problem where we as a "Germans" have to live with "Romanic" people. Just to give u an example, during WWII The Flemish part was absorbed by Hitler into the great German Reich, because in his vieuw we are part of the "germans". After the war the Wallons decided to get payback on the Flemish part by imprisoning and executing a large part of the Flemish intelligentia, to break the Flemish spirit.
They failed miserably as every election shows.

i know it was a long and difficult explanation but that is the way it is done here.

Very interesting,

Sounds like the Wallons had a very short memory after the seond world war, how did they explain away Leon Degrelle and the Rexist partys collaboration with the occupiers? I worked for a Veterinarian who attended the University of Liege for Vet school and he has told me many storys about his time there. He described the animosity between the major ethnic groups very clearly. Unfortunately in the US we don't really have much understanding of the History of other countries. Its a lack of books on the subjests I guess. Your post was very interesting.

Strangly not one single Wallon was executed for collaboration by the Belgium governement after the war. Leon Degrelle and a lot of Legionairs from the Legion Wallon fled to Spain and Leon Degrelle died there a few years ago. The Belgium governement was very displeased by the fact that his ashes were smuggled into Belgium and were placed in a river in Wallonië. Even after his death he gave the Belgium governement the middlefinger. Collaboration in the Wallon part was seen as firmly believing in European National Socialism although they were not regarded as "Ariens" by Hitler, they where also not allowed to wear the sieg runes or join the "schutzstaffeln" . Collaboration in Vlaanderen ( Flemish part) was seen as a way of getting an independent Flemish state in the great German Reich, and second as a form of "national socialism" inwhere the Flemish where part of one large ethnic entity.
Of course this part of Belgium history is not learned in the Belgium school system, and they try to silence the fact that Wallon fighters also fought with Hitler against communism. The Belgium governement still tries to make a link between modern, right wing conservative, nationalism in Vlaanderen and WWII and the Holocaust to scare people away because they realise that Belgium is a very fragile artificial state that could collaps once the people figure out what is going on. There is even a nationalist movement in Vlaanderen that wants to form a state with the Netherlands, instead of beeing an independent state.

Belgium is a fun country to live in. And u are making a problem about what president to choose? And u have what, 2 mayor political factions? U should be glad that it is such a transparant political system! :D We can choose for about 20 different political parties, and then they will decide who and why becomes what in the political arena. :D

Here in Romania, terrorism was just a subject regarding the outer countries, good for a flash or two at the news. It was something exotic (in the negative sense, but still exotic), totally far and away from us.
But when I heard (also at the local news) last year that someone threw a grenade in a school yard and injured some children, I realized that we finally became a civilized country :(
Now I hear all the time here about fights between various street gangs, or the Russian "rackets" (that's how they call themselves, "rackets" - funny isn't it?), or the gipsies and it's not even a novelty any more
