Erasteel already has three facilities that make powder in Sodorfors, Sweden.

Erasteel also already makes powder for Carpenter.
...
My understanding is Crucible had been making powdered steel in-house till now. Carpenter has been outsourcing powdered steel to Europe.

Am I to understand that Crucible and Carpenter out source their powder process That they do not do it "in-house". That seems strange since I have watched the powdering process at Crucible a couple of times?

sal
According to Bob Shabala NSM, Carpenter imports powder for steel.

Carpenter's atomizing facilities for making powder are busy making more lucrative, non ferrous aerospace materials rather than steels.

Yes, also Carpenter gets their powder form a different source than Erasteel, I was incorrect.

I assumed it was Erasteel because the Carpenter powder also comes from Sodorfors, Sweden, but is a separate company/facility that is not disclosed.

Hey @sal, my understanding is that Crucible made their own powder, but Carpenter outsources theirs to Erasteel.

Unless the new team who bought the Crucible plant fire up the crucibles and start making powder, all powder will now be made outside the US.

That ain't anything to laugh at when you think of something like Chinese- MagnaCut, and if the Chinese are driving, what they would even sell us, they might decide they don't want us to even get their MagnaCut... We get scrap rebar!

I haven't seen this posted anywhere else in the forum yet, so figured it was semi relevant here for members to see.
This was posted by Jeff Loffer onto a fbook page. I don't know details myself, just passing along his photos from his post.

Very cool gesture by Spyderco to the employees of Crucible to apparently celebrate their 15th anniversary... But seemingly also may be a parting gift...

That is a very cool PM2. I shudder to think what the secondary market prices will be though

Erasteel press release, go read. I quoted most of it, the bolding is mine:

https://www.erasteel.com/wp-content/upl ... y-2025.pdf
Paris, February 26th, 2025
ERASTEEL ACQUIRES ASSETS OF CRUCIBLE INDUSTRIES LLC
Paris, February 26th, 2025 - Erasteel announces the acquisition of a part of the assets of Crucible
Industries LLC, an American steelmaker specializing in powder metallurgy, High-Speed Steels and stainless steels, which filed for bankruptcy on December 12, 2024.
This asset purchase includes inventories, intellectual property and specific industrial equipment related to powder metallurgy production.
Through this acquisition, Erasteel is strengthening its presence in the United States and confirming its commitment to this market as a long-standing partner for the tooling, automotive, energy, aerospace, precision toolmaking and knifemaking industry.
The heritage of the CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) brand, which has served the American market for over 100 years, will be preserved. Erasteel has an industrial history dating back to the 15th century and was the pioneer of powder High-Speed Steel technology. It is committed to further developing this technology to offer ever more efficient, innovative, and sustainable solutions.
“The acquisition of these assets is part of our strategy to strengthen our position as a world leader in Powder-Metallurgy High-Speed Steels. We are delighted that our offer has been selected and intend to continue to serve the US market with the quality and service they expect.” Sophie Haan, Erasteel CEO

Sounds promising, it even sounds like they will increase their presence in the US, maybe that even means some limited production.
