Not getting the Cru-Wear and Magnacut Manix 2s hurt a bit, but the wife being okay with a ton of $$ being spent was the soothing balm to the pain Just getting to know that the Manix 2 was my jam was a win in and of itself. And S30V is no slouch.

The real question is what happens after the sale. Is there stuff left over? I was talking w/ someone about another 15V Mule Team. If they didn't sell out, would they have those at the Outlet that someone could ask for?

My guess… they keep putting them out each year until they have too much stuff. At that point they clear out with an online sale.

But yes I would love to call, ask if they have any seconds Mules in stock and get one sent to me. I just have a feeling that would be a total nightmare and make no money.

Looking at your signature, I see you have the regular Manix 2 and also the BBB 15V version...would there be any chance I might be able to ask you about any differences you've noticed between the two of them? Now that I know I'm a big Manix 2 fan, I want to try more flavors! Thanks for any info.

There are two versions of the Manix 2, a G-10 version and a LW (light weight) FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon). Same exact knife with but with different scales, it’s crazy but they give the knives a totally different feel.

I would recommend getting one of each to start. My two personal favorites of the LW version is the SPY-27 and MagnaCut which is in their salt series.

Beyond that you can try different steels in the Manix. The standard version I have uses S30V. It is a super steel that is fairly well rounded in addition to being stainless. My 15V version is a tool steel meaning it will rust/patina without care. But 15V is very high edge retention steel that will stay sharp and cut well after S30V dulls.

I am personal a fan of tool steels. I don’t mind sacrificing stainless for a steel that is generally tougher and has more edge retention than stainless counterparts. The exception is MagnaCut, preforms amazing and very stainless.

The Paysan that I got in the online sale a few years ago it's fantastic. One of my prized possessions for sure

The lock up is really late (basically touching the opposite side of the frame) and sticky so I need to see if I can source a new lock bar insert but otherwise it’s beautiful and I’m over the moon with it!

It looks like you and I think very similar. I had the Magnacut Manix 2 (as well as the Cru-Wear version) in my basket for quite a long time before I let them go. They were around $100 or so, which is still a great deal, but couldn't compete against those S30V ones for $42. I picked up 2 of those and if I didn't have a budget I probably would have gotten 10 more! I can't remember what the SPY27 ones were going for, but they were probably even cheaper. I know the Native 5s in S30V were $37 (insane), and and I think the FRN version in SPY27 was even less. I think I remember seeing a white FRM scaled version in REX-45. A guy even handed me an exclusive Manix 2 in 204P. So many choices! A Manix 2 in 15V was on 'the list' but I didn't see a single knife in 15V other than the Mule Teams. I will still keep an eye out for one of those. I wonder if REC ever did a Manix 2 in 10V, I'll have to look. Like you, I'm a fan of tool steels, I like the way they age, and here in Colorado we don't really need crazy corrosion resistance.

I wish wish wish Spyderco would release a production model Manix 2 in K390. That's the beauty of it being a second. I don't carry any one knife daily but the Paysan definitely makes it into my pocket and it does get used

I think I got lucky with mine. It's about as good as it can get. There's one little dot on the blade that I have to look for to find it. It's basically a first with a seconds notch ground in it

As far 10V the Manix has not been released in it yet. But REC did give me a hint recently a new 10V model was expected in the next few months and it’s not a Shaman. Been bugging them as I want to get my first Shaman at some point. If I was a betting man it’s probably/hopefully a Manix. 10V is very similar to K390 but has a bit more edge retention. If you’re looking for Manix K390 this might be the closest thing we get for a while. IMO 10V is a sleeper and not getting the attention it deserves like K390.

If that Manix 2 204p was the forest green handle I would have jumped, great looking knife but almost identical to the S30V version so I can’t justify the price of a new one.

As for Manix 15V I think we will see a LW version coming out in the next reveal, I was pretty surprised it was not in this one.

Also wanted to mention there is a Manix XL, it’s big, but one of the best grips on a knife I have ever seen. A friend had one and I fell in love, just big for me as I work in a suit or blazer every day.

Those are crazy prices for the S30V Manix, mine is approaching 12 years old and still works like the day I bought it. Half the reason I want to go to the seconds sale at some point is to just play with all the knives to see what I like. Feel like I could find a few hidden gems I would love but never thought of trying.

I live in the Mid Atlantic, lots of humidity and I have had no rust issues with my tool steels, but i do take care of them.

Thanks for your reply. We've all been a little sick over here in the Red Leader household, hence the late reply.

In the last few months, I've done more research on knife steels and steel technology than in all the years proceeding. Its been a fun journey and I appreciate the work of Mr Thomas (along w/ many others, like Mr Houston and our very own SteelToes83) on the knife steel journey. It feels like a golden era.

The ones that really stick out in my mind are Cru-Wear, Vanadis 8, 10V/K294, K390, 15V, and probably a few others I don't know anything about. I hear Vanadis 8 is tricky to get a hold of, but I wonder if Spyderco leaning into it with a Mule first and then some other Sprint Runs could be just the thing to jumpstart it - looks to be very similar in performance to 10V, w/ a jump in toughness - I like! I'm also liking Cru-Wear, as it provides a big jump in toughness, albeit with a bit of a decrease in edge retention. Someone on Reddit took the Knife Steel Nerds charts and dove into the data a bit further to make some of the comparisons easier. I tend to look at S30V as the grandfather of super steels, and it is still used as a benchmark, yet it is enlightening to see where it is on a toughness/edge retention chart and just how many other steels now either provide a huge leap in toughness for the same edge retention, or a big leap in edge retention for the same toughness.

Speaking of the Manix 2 XL, I picked one of those up for my dad. He requested a full size knife and something that would be good for farm tasks. You are right, it feels like someone really took their time when designing the handle to melt into the hand. They had those for $53! Along with the Manix 2 XL were the Bodacious and the Shaman. Those were around $120-$140. I liked the Manix 2 XL better than both. The Shaman's handle was smooth, maybe a bit too smooth? I grabbed about 3-4 of them in my basket to compare and ended up putting them all back, as they all had just a hit of side-to-side blade play, and just didn't feel as refined as the Manix. The Bodacious was another cool knife, but the handle didn't lock you in like the Manix. Interestingly, when I had previously stopped by the outlet, I met and talked with one of the lead machinists there, who told me that the Bodacious was one of the knives that ended up cutting a lot of people in production, because when you close the blade, it doesn't have a similar spot like most Spydercos that can rest on your finger. Thought that was interesting.

If you ever get a chance to go, it's great fun. It was our first year, so we went a little crazy (there is SO much), but I do think in subsequent years I can be a bit more focused.

At the risk of continuing to slide more off-topic here, I was reading a discussion back from 2022 on this forum about interest in a 'mini Manix', basically, something a bit more Native 5-esqe, 'round a 3" blade, but same BBL mechanism. I think it makes a lot of sense. Sal did chime in to that thread and mentioned they had discussed it I do admire the compression lock, but its not very left-friendly for me (which is what prevented me from picking up one of those 10V REC exclusive Para 3s at the sale), and the Native 5 is a great package, but the back lock, while great for being reliable and fully ambidextrous, doesn't provide the same ease or smoothness of opening or closing as does the BBL. I hope they continue to consider it.
