The US and Taiwan spyders are (most?) always different. The Japanese spyder is more like the US one.

All Tichung Taiwan but rex121 has a different spyder texture. Maybe because it’s harder?Molle Ninja wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 6:27 pmThe US and Taiwan spyders are (most?) always different. The Japanese spyder is more like the US one.

I bet the steel is so hard they had to bump the laser power or go over it twice to get the right Spyder shade like MrJ said.

Notice in my photos the maxamet has a slight difference too. Just not as prominent as the

I finally got the email from BladeHQ. I'm excited about this. This is the first Sage in my collection and it will be here soon.

I went with the Lightweight.

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
I agree. I have the BHQ exclusive Sage 5 LW with M4 and mint green FRN, and it’s the most precise Spyderco I’ve owned, which is probably over a hundred at this point. It’s perfection.Buddafucco wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 6:25 pmWilliamMunny wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 2:59 pmIMO for a smaller light weight knife the FRN is my preference, especially with how nice the Sage LW scales look.Buddafucco wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 12:23 pmI want to support Spyderco's willingness to take a chance on exotic steels like this. Can’t wait for my Rex 121 LW to show up. Gonna put it through its paces for sure.

I'm surprised to see what appears to be a polished tang and spine, or is it stonewashed?
I'm curious to see how the satin primary grind would handle corrosion.

I think the “Burnt Orange” is more like Baked Beans color. I’m calling mine the baked bean. It sounds better and is roughly bean shaped when closed.

I just spent $500 on new stones for a $300 knife

Going to mirror polish this baked bean to 11k grit. Use it to shave AND as a mirror.

You have chosen well. I am looking forward to hearing how 121 is. A lot of people hated Maxamet for chipping but I have had a very good experience with it so far on a Para 3 and Native 5.Buddafucco wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 6:25 pmWilliamMunny wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 2:59 pmIMO for a smaller light weight knife the FRN is my preference, especially with how nice the Sage LW scales look.Buddafucco wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 12:23 pmI want to support Spyderco's willingness to take a chance on exotic steels like this. At a 5 gram & $45 difference I'm finding it very difficult to decide.
ETA: If I'm being honest, I'll probably just wait for some early disaffected buyer to off-load one on the secondary...or for the fall sales to kick in, definitely picking one up someway though.

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Have you invested in a good sharpening system with diamond or CBN stones? This might be needed soon enough with such a high carbide/hardness blade.

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Picked mine up yesterday from the local knife store. (G-10) First impressions…. The pivot was a little too tight but easy to adjust. It had a so so edge and would cut but it wasn’t razor sharp. Tried stropping it but that didn’t improve the edge. Got out the DMT diamond stones and was able to put a razor edge on it with a little more effort than say Magnacut. It wasn’t quite there after using my normal strop so i used the inside of my work belt which is fairly rough and that seemed to do the trick. It’s going to take some time to see how long the edge lasts.

Yeah, I invested in bonded resin CBN Venev stones years ago.
So it goes.

That steel is to difficult for me at this stage but I’m very curious to see how it does.
