First of all, thanks to Spyderco for the contest. I've always admired that their innovation in cutlery design is matched by their dedication to the customers they serve.

Second, there are so many good entries here -- Spyderco knife knuts are truly a creative bunch. I'm glad I don't have to choose the winners!

For what it's worth, here's my entry:

thumb to‿open

A little explanation on how I came up with this for anyone who's interested:

As we all know, Spyderco's trademark round hole is perhaps its most distinctive feature, especially for those who are new to the brand. Not surprisingly, a lot of entries have referenced the hole, but few if any convey why the round hole is so significant to someone who has never handled a Spyderco.

To the uninitiated, the round hole may seem to be ornamental, but it's anything but. It's an integral part of the design that allows for easy, ambidextrous, one-hand opening of the knife. In other words, it's purely functional. My tag-line seeks to convey this simplicity of function in the simplest of terms.

My inspiration was the iPhone's infamous 'slide to unlock' phrase/gesture. Although countless touchscreen devices have similar unlock gestures, none are quite so intuitive or elegantly stated. One does not even need to understand the phrase to know what to do.

The same can be said of Spyderco's round hole. Although many solutions to opening knives one-handed exist (e.g., studs, flippers, automatics, balisongs, etc.), none are quite so elegant in function and form as a simple round hole in the blade. My goal was to give Spyderco it's own 'slide to unlock' catchphrase that can hopefully attract new, savvy customers to a forward-thinking knife brand.

Haven't read any of the other posts, but it's good to see the old forum again. Good luck to all, but time for me to disappear again :/
