Cooked chicken (or any cooked meat) is instant funky blue patina. It is the first thing I cut with new Japanese carbon steel kitchen knives.

My first Manix and I’m liking it. The scale color though…
How does one Rit dye a pinned knife with tool steel? Hold it by the blade while dunking it and get it dry as quickly as possible? Bad idea?

That is what I would do. Or suspend it in someway if you want a darker color and it will be bathing for longer. I believe some directions call for adding salt and or vinegar. I skip that part. I do add a tad bit of Dawn Dish soap. That allows the water to penetrate a little better into the material. I guess you could say thins it out. FRN is much easier than G10. I do not boil water for FRN. I have a hot water tap I installed next to my kitchen sink. The temp is probably just below boiling. Works like charm.

Got it thanks. Main concern was inability to disassemble. Went to flip the clip and the barrel was stuck. A closer look revealed it was wedged in there. Might have been over-tightened or its undersize for the hole. Just used a small punch to knock it out. Not a big deal with the proper tools just thought I'd share.

I have to join the choir. Since receiving the Minty M4 Manix, haven't been carrying anything else--even though, for me, it is a back pocket knife due to its size. And yes, I got a couple of dark spots on the blade already! It's the "pre-Magnacut Manix." It's a lot like I'd expect Magnacut to behave, other than the low corrosion resistance.

What kind of edge are you going to try first when it comes to sharpening? I plan on going with the 320 grit on a WSPA followed by some 4 and 1 micron diamond strops. I'm not as thoughtful as you, friend, but your plan sounds good. I'm also waiting for the factory edge to dull...might take awhile. My problem is, I have the ability to make mirror edges with diamond stones, so that's what I automatically want to do. Even if that's not the best edge for a particular steel. I'm caught in 'an earlier stage of development,' as far as sharpening goes.

Regarding dyeing - can the blade not be removed and reinstalled back again? The pivot is screw construction, so it should be possible to remove. Then, with some finessing and twiddling it should be possible to put it back in :D. The same way one might dis- and reassemble an integral

the manix pivot rides on a tube that is wider then the blade and it anchored into the handles. taking the pivot screws out does not allow the blade to be freely removed. you would have to pry the scales apart far enough to get the pivot out and then do it again to put it back. i wouldn't suggest it because you'll likely break the frcp. the best bet would be doing a conversion to screws like others have posted about.horzuff wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 2:34 amRegarding dyeing - can the blade not be removed and reinstalled back again? Ahhh, I forgot it didn't have a classic bushing pivot but this double-diameter, single-piece solution

Several weeks into this one and I am still liking it. Impressed with the M4. Haven't yet done a ton of cutting but the factory edge still impresses me. We'll see when it needs touching up. Going hiking on Thursday, it will be my pocket companion.

The factory edge on mine was blazing sharp, with a little stropping it would whittle a hair! But I used it around the workshop over the weekend cutting against a pretty dirty workbench and managed to get some reflections off the edge of I looked real close. All the excuse I needed!
I tend to use dmt fine and extra fine plates, followed by 6, 1, and 0.1 micron strops, and this guy came up real scary!

Thinking about picking one of these up. Never had a lw manix and I’m not a drooler for drop shut… but how’s the action on these knives?

The action is pretty decent not drop shut out of the box but can be one handed closed with a flick. I would say go for it, the steel sharpens up amazing and holds and edge that and the factory edge is scary sharp, this one is a crazy good deal.
