It is very close in length but will be noticeably shorter in width (i.e., spine-side to edge-side measurement).Nemonomicon wrote:Do we know and is it OK to ask what the dimensions are on the Air. I've been carring a Benchmade Mel Pardue 330 Gent for a few years now. It looks to be about the same size. It would be great if it is. While I like the Gent, it isn't a Spydie.

That's your opinion.DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:The Air doesn't have a clip because it is a gentleman's folder...and that type of knife just isn't a knife that is clipped. It is a pocket carry knife.
Right, a clip is just fine on a "gent's" knife and there are plenty of examples with them.gbelleh wrote:There are plenty of gentleman's folders with clips. The CRK Mnandi is about as gentlemanly a folder as I've ever seen. Still, it has an elegant, unobtrusive, yet completely removable clip. I know, it all comes down to personal preference, but I find a clip extremely useful, even on a nice gentleman's folder. I doubt this will stop me from buying the Air, but for me, it will limit its use.
**The kicker is that its a LOT more work to add a clip than to remove one. I know it does leave unsightly screw holes when you remove a clip.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

It's all opinion, really. I can accept that others feel differently, but to me a clip spoils the look of a gent's knife and I'd probably own about 100 less Spydercos if the Kiwi had one. That said, I do find the Air's lack of both a clip and a lanyard hole a tad strange.araneae wrote:That's your opinion.

Agreed that it is opinion, Paul. I've yanked the clips off of many small Spydercos - and added short lanyards to many as well. That's just the way I carry these type of knives...The Deacon wrote:It's all opinion, really. It is Mr. Bradley's decision about how to configure his New Baby
Personally, I kinda like the aesthetics of this design. Light, simple, clean, sophisticated - and very functional. I've got my pre-order in!

Spyderco 2012 Production Prototype – Pekka Tuominen Nilakka
By this time during the meet I was busy taking the photos. Subsequently, I didn’t catch much info about this model from Sal or Eric. I hope some of the other attendees can add their info and impressions on this model.

To me, this knife was a lovely surprise. I love the design and engineering to make it truly look like a traditional Puukko with a modern twist. The knife seemed to me to have 3,5 to 4 inch blade. The blade is zero-ground. The nick in the edge you see in these photos was the result of accidentally dropping the prototype. The blade just flies open and the handle seemed very ergonomic. Odd though, considering the boxy look of the handle. The knife seemed about as heavy as a typical 4-inch G10 Spydie. I’m extremely interested in trying out this unique design.

I look forward to this thread every year! I like the look of the Air. I wish it had a lanyard hole, though. Maybe a lanyard could be attached to the last stand-off? Lanyard hole would be better though.
The Nilakka looks very interesting. Given the deep-carry clip, I would like to see a lanyard hole on this one as well (similar to PPT).
Foundry also looks like a cool knife.
Looking forward to more pictures!

Agreed that we are all going to have our differing opinions of things...to me the Air seems like a very European gent's folder and those never seem to have clips or lanyanrd holes. If anything they often come with a leather sleeve to protect the knife in the pocket. That would be nice to get with the Air. But I am EXTREMELY happy to see neither a clip or lanyard hole.
The Nilakka looks good, but I agree that the cut out seems far far too large, and that the bottom looks full of sharp edges that might not be very comfortable. And I don't like that super thin little bit of G10 where the lock bar rests. Other than that...I have no complaints and it looks like one to keep an eye on.

Interesting liner lock on the Nilakka, looks like a different action then most we're used too.
Looks like innovative variation of the walker liner.....I got to say I wish the
cut out was like the gayle bradley...It would look much more stream line..Another
feature I like about the nilakka is the grind....it looks ZERO.Very nice..
thx router..

Spyderco 2012 Prototype – Laci Szabo Folder
The Szabo folder is still in development. The most striking change is the handle material. Another challenge with this huge folder is the self-close mechanism that works separately from the lock.

Spyderco is now considering using a new type of carbon fiber, inspired by ‘lightning strike carbon fiber’. This concept was originally designed by Boeing for use in airplane parts. By weaving strands of metal in with the carbon fiber, the material becomes better protected against…lighting strikes. This is likely not lightning strike CF but 'Golden Carbon Fiber'. It sure looks striking. The folder was designed as an MBC folder that complements Laci’s method of reverse grip knife fighting.

More really great pics!!
One that, when I first saw it, I wasn't at all interested in. But after rewatching last year's video, and seeing the new scales, I think that I might be in for one. It is a unique design that is for sure.
Though I am not too sure that I like the look of that rounded tab on the lock. I think that they should do compression locks more like the Junior with the big flat release. it is much nicer to look and and more comfortable for us lefties.

Yup. And that is why I mentioned it in my post too. It doesn't look very strong and it looks sharp.hiredgun wrote:I'm very interested in the Nilakka and I like the clip design. I'm no expert on the properties and strength of G-10, but does the cutout on the scale highlighted below seem rather thin?
