I've started this post a few times but ended up deleting it because I was afraid that it might cause offense, however I can't hold back any longer. I can understand that many of you might want a patriotic knife after what America has been through but don't forget that this is an international forum. As much as I sympathise with you (and remember there were also many Australians killed), I have no desire to purchase a Forum knife with an American flag much less red, white and blue scales. For me those colours represent the English Queen and don't sit well with an avowed republican. There looks like I've managed to offend all the English here as well as the Americans but would any of you be interested in a forum knife with green and gold scales and a Southern Cross .

BTW I still favour ivory but would be happy with burgundy or dark blue.

A good point well made Clay. (personally I'm holding out for the white cross on the black background of the Cornish flag ). I had almost wrote the same post.

The way I rationalise it is, as long as it's not just one big American flag, and just had either a small American flag (which would be more classy IMHO) or a red white & blue theme, I feal that I would have no problem with showing solidarity with those involved on the 11 th. Normally I don't like logos, badges or other identifers on my prossessions (the spyder bug being an exception), but in this extreme case I think identifying with a country that has undergone such a tradjedy is not unreasonable.

Just so I don't get in the habit of agreeing with you , personally I would perfor a non white / ivory handle. I'm not a big fan of FRN, it feals too plastic'y to me, and I think white would acentuate it's plastic'y ness. Prefer dark handles myself.

Well... nine pages of comments later... I agree that this should commemerate the recent tragedies... red/white and blue... flag, etc. Maybe the engraving should be "Remember 9/11/2001"
(I prefer that the handle not be white and the size not be whimpy.)
Count me in...

Well said Clay. I think that this suggested Forum Edition of the Vesuvius be kept neutral. I still vote for Ivory or White with a silver bug.

For those who want a "patriotic" red, white and blue folder or something with a flag, to commemorate 9-11, then may I suggest starting a new thread asking not for a Forum knife, but for a special 9-11 Commemorative knife. Something like that would have a wider audience and application than a Forum knife, and perhaps they could do more with it as a mass-market run.

A mass-market run of a "patriotic" knife would no longer be special... now would it?

I suggest the "time frame doesn't matter" forum run hold for the next time and it be a "patriotic" forum knife this time.

I would go for for a Vesuvius as well. It's a great looking knife, and I don't have a compression lock yet either...... come to think of it, my son would buy one as well.

Heck, what ever we get will be worth it.

Great Idea Sal..

The idea of a special patriotic theme knife is a good one in light of 9-11-01. What better than red/white/blue or a US flag. Contrary to ideas from elsewhere, its a symbol of true freedom and hope. It's hard to understand if you don't have it. I say go for it spyderco. If done right many would want one. Who cares how limited it is, its the message not the uniqueness that matters.

I think Spyderco made a "Q" with the stars and stripes cutout treatment on the blade. Updating that knife with a different color handle (I like red, white and blue splash on the black frn) with or without the "9/11/01" wording seem to have alot of possibilities for either a "patriotic" or "memorial" knife with minimal(?) retooling for Spyderco.

I think a new "Q" would blow the vesuvius out of the water. It is way cooler looking and is so uniquely spyderco. I also only started with spyderco collecting this summer so I more or less missed out on that series of spydies.

So where do we stand today? I still vote for the "Q"

The "Q" is not lekely. The FRN tooling never did what I wanted, The clip didn't work as well as I'd hoped, and the cost of the lazer cut of the blade was cost prohibitive.

We're working on a Burgundy Vesuvius with a bug inlay.

OK, I'm in. That's just the excuse I needed to buy a Vesuvius. Thanks Sal.

I think that a burgundy Vesuvius would be great!

Would the forum models be numbered? If so
is it possible to "sign up" for a number, I
have a numbered inlayed Vesuvius, and it would be nice to have matching numbers.
