Anyone have any idea how REX121 will compare to Maxamet in real world use? Will 121 just be a bit more chippy with a bit more edge retention or is there something else to be expected?

Maxamet but more maxamety. To paraphrase Daft Punk: Harder, better, chippier, edgier.

This will be a fun one. Had a Sage 1 in Maxamet and thought it was heavy for its size, so maybe the lightweight version will be just right?
I didn't look up the weight for a Sage 1, but the weight difference between the Sage 5 in G10 and FRN seems almost negligible. 0.1-0.2 oz. depending on which version you look at, Rex 121 or Spy27.
Despite that miniscule weight saving it's apparently enough to earn it the description: "unparalleled edge retention in an ultra lightweight format" in the reveal catalogue.
I really like the FRN scales on my Chap, so I'll be getting the "LW" despite not being much lighter.

I don't know much about Rex 121 so I was going to ask the same question as William.
I have a P3 in maxamet and I haven't found it to be all that chippy, but it's a beast as far as edge retention goes. It's just wild to imagine it can be beat, and here Rex 121 comes along. I definitively don't need that increase in edge retention, but I sure am curious to try it :)

I have a Native 5 and Para 3 in Maximet and only had one small chip near the tip of the Para 3. Otherwise no issues including not needing to sharpen them yet. On the flip side these are my office knives and I don’t push them. Big fan of Maxamet when use what it was meant for.

I am hoping Shawn can add something as I have seen that he has made custom knives in 121 before. My only fear would be that it is so chippy I would be afraid to use a $300 knife due to possible damage or lend it to someone who “needs to cut something” real quick.

:astonished

I was really looking forward to this, but for $400 MSRP, that thing can stay on a stockroom shelf. I have enough Maxamet, Z-Max, 15V, T15, Rex 76/45, etc., that I think I might just be okay without Rex 121.

Yeah me too. I have a Maxamet Sage 1 that rarely sees the light of day. I had my CF/G10 Sage 5 on me earlier. I'm perfectly happy with that. At $254 street price I think I'll pass too. I'm happy it's available for others to buy though

I want to support Spyderco's willingness to take a chance on exotic steels like this. Any opinions on which Rex121 Sage5 to get... G-10 or Lightweight?

IMO for a smaller light weight knife the FRN is my preference, especially with how nice the Sage LW scales look.

I'm kind of wrestling with whether to get one of these or a Sandrin Torino.

For those who are debating on purchasing, 2 1/2 hrs after Buddafucco announced, there were only 2 available. And then there was one. It has shipped. The last one was gone shortly thereafter. They are listed as ‘out of stock’ at this time.
