Correct. The Southard and Slyz family have the Stone Wash finish.
Extremely nice...

Good deal. You might need to take a little alcohol and wipe the Blade off. She'll really shine right up. Action might be just a bit stiff at first, but she'll settle in. Congratz again man. Looking forward to your 1st impressions.

My first post here.
Originally the Southard was on my "to get list", however, the wife bought me a Nirvana from the SFO for Christmas, well I got it with my SFO military discount (thanks Sal). I also recently purchased the GB Advocate, so my folding money was all spent. Then I read this thread, and between everybody loving it and the sale at Blade HQ I had to get it.
WOW, this thing is flipping great, just a lovely knife. Thanks to all that posted, Blade HQ for the sale and Spyderco for the quality.

My back Southard arrived today. Action is as I remember. That is to say perfect...
One thing I noticed was that the black G10 is very smooth. Noticeably more so than I recall the brown Southard having. And also smoother than Golden's G10 on say my Cruwear PM2. Can anyone with a black Southard confirm that this is expected?
Thanks!
More thoughts to follow after I get reacquainted...

Haha, I know I don't actually need a Southard. Just like I don't actually need most of the other knives I've procured in the last few years. In fact, I just put the Sliverax back in my pocket after carrying a M2 LW & UKPK LW today and it feels so right that I'm questioning why I ordered the Southard. For me the Sliverax is that good.
My favorite knife in this class is the M2 LW. Have always been attracted to the Southard, and may keep it mostly as a hiking pack watch. If not I'll pass it on NIB to a more worthy owner.

You’re absolutely right that it needs a clean wipe to get rid of oils. Other than that everything seems to be perfect and better than expected in person. All the good things that everyone raves about this knife is true but if I nick pick about one thing then it would be color of the G10 which seem to be little lighter than I expected.

Overall, I’m glad that I got it and “it’s a gem” :)

Awesome! Glad you like it.
And yes, the brown is much lighter than what you would think it would be. But, nice and grippy though imo.

I can confirm the black handles are noticeably smoother than the brown. I got to handle both at the SFO and actually went with the brown at the last minute because of their greater "grippy-ness"s. Very nice knife and the flipper works great!

Enjoy!

Thanks MacLaren and Dokute for confirming! I've been carrying the Southard all weekend, and I am not really sure why I got rid of my brown one in the first place. Must have been a brief lapse in judgment... :o

Nice knife that seems to lock into my hand really well, mostly due to the lock bar access cutout. Flipping action is solid, although not as snappy as my Mantra. But it fires reliably with either "light switch" or "push button" technique. I am happy that I got the black, if for no reason other than it is different than my previous Southard. I'm not going to get an aftermarket deep carry clip for this (ad I did previously) as when in hand the stock clip is barely noticeable. Both the grind and the black coating are flawless.

Overall, I am really really enjoying it. However, after a VERY expensive 2 weeks, I am going to turn it down for a few months. I have unsubscribed from the Deals thread to demonstrate my seriousness... :D

Mine arrived today. To say blown away is an understatement. I've always thought the "if you could only keep 1" threads were a little silly, and they are, but I really think I could be happy with only a Southard and a dragonfly. Knocked the PITS down to #2 of my nicest knives.
