I played it safe and went ahead and placed a pre-order. I hope they include a tips sheet on how to care for the steel to help it resist rust as ive seen it happen in 12 hours on my Murray Carter kitchen paring knife my dad used and put in the sink.
I hope its done in a FFG or in a way it has a thick spine but a thin grind angle so the great thin edge the steel can take can be taken advantage of.

The Caly 3.5 is FFG and has a fairly thick spine but is ground very thin near and above the edge. That's one of the features that makes the Caly line so great.DasFriek wrote:Im in, I love Super Blue!

Im not a person who is into waiting on knives to hit the market, Usually ill find something else and buy it and forget the other. But not this time, Im getting this Caly. This knife is about the closest I will ever come to getting a custom knife from Spyderco. Or, for that matter, a "joe" designed knife. I'm going to need a couple of extra "pre need replacements" for this one in case it turns out to be a one off run, or sprint.
I hope it's around RC 61-62 or so. Too low is a waste, too high will be causing everything from chipping complaints to rusting issues ( more than normal).
The Tungsten containing alloy steels are usually my favorites due to the compromise between edge taking/stability, and good, but not quite vanadium wear resistance.
I tried for years to talk Sal into Vascowear for a sprint. Mostly it was in jest as it's really not practical whatsoever. For the troubles that come with it there sure are better performers in one way or another. It led to 3V, which is a good thing and I keep accumulating more and more knives in that steel. The Tuff will be nice, and I'm looking forward to it.
A Super blue caly 3.5 is about as close as I'll ever get to a perfect knife for me. Similar would be 3V and 52100, or even M2/CPM m4. All are good to excellent edge stability and good to excellent wear resistance.

BTW Sal, did you ever get around to making a mule or two out of that cruware I sent?

Its ideal for anything that isnt constantly keeping the blade wet, It will rust quickly if not kept wiped off and dry.
The name comes from the color of the labels that Hitachi puts on the rolls of steel, Initially Super Blue was just known as "Blue" steel. They have a "White" steel which is almost identical but with a few slight changes in composition, But you don't hear much about that steel outside of Japan and in kitchen knives and stuff Murray Carter makes.
These steels have very small carbides which allow for fine edges, But its bigger point is it can be hardened to very high numbers and most likley higher than what Spyderco will go as you risk chipping the higher you go. Its very easy to sharpen, Yet holds an edge about as good as ANY steel on the market.
But one thing that give it these great properties is that it is a carbon steel, Not stainless steel. So much care has to be given to maintenance to make sure rust and corrosion doesn't set in.
This is why i hope Spyderco includes a tip sheet on how to maintain the blade steel or i feel alot of people are gonna be mad 3 weeks after they buy their knives and don't wipe it dry once and have a rusted knife.
Also forget a shiny blade, Carbon steel will patina which gives it a dull discolored look which is good as that helps retard rust also.
So imo this knife isn't for 80% of the knife carrying public, But that my opinion.
But ill take 2 please! :)

Excellent summary about Blue steel. I have some Blue (not "Super" Blue) and White steel kitchen knives. They are fantastic in how easy they are to sharpen and how sharp they can get.
I agree that some instructions on how to care for the steel should be included with the Super Blue Caly 3.5.
I'll definitely take 1 (and depending on finances might take two too). :)
