H1 Spyderhawk -- Let's Commit!

Hey JD what type of yellow H1 do u have and what type of work do u use it in. I use my tasman working security down at the beach and while doing my EMT shifts.

Currently I am employed by a company that does custom modifications to brand new vehicles. I am finding many, many uses for a Hawkbill blade. I'm constantly having fellow workers borrowing mine all the time.

At this time and for the past 4 to 5 months I've been EDCing a Yellow handled, PE Tasman, H-1. I use it along side with my Golden Co USA made Spyderco Native model 440V, SE. Before I had this combination to work with I had previously been carrying an SE, ATS-55 Harpy with a G-10 handle and I used it in combination with my ZDp-189, PE Caly Jr. I'm actually liking using the PE Hawkbill for a change and find it extremely useful around all the auto electronics I've been working with. But I constantly find more and more uses for PE & SE Hawkbills. To me just a standard folder is not enough. I think everyone's EDC should include a Spyderco folder and a Spyderco Hawkbill. I simply won't leave home without a Spyderco Hawkbill & folder combo.

If Spyderco comes through with an H-1 Spyderhawk I will carry it in combo with a Military model for an entire year. That's a pledge I will live up to. Now it's up to the Great Spyder FActory to get this ball rolling.

More H1 in general is a great idea. Lots of people worry about their knives rusting... I'd say, it's more a concern for many people than edge retention. And H1 does have good edge retention... especially great in SE, in the rock salt, and in steel that has been used, stressed, and resharpened often. These are knives that will last for ages. It's going to take people time to catch on, but the demand for H1 is likely to just increase over the years, I'd say.

I have to agree with clovisc here. The edge retention is great and these H1 knives can and will take just about anything thrown at them. I think with threads like this one people will start to catch on to just how good they are and hopefully make the H1 spyderhawk a reality.

I think the H-1 Spyderhawk's biggest hangup is its political incorrectness. It's big, mean, and scary-looking, afterall. :rolleyes: Sure would be a dumb reason not to make such a brilliant knife, though.

Excellent point. However, the Civilian has been in the lineup for eons, plus, it's a limited production, yada yada. I think Sal is a bit leery of introducing another large, really curvy hawkbill.

This just makes me want an H-1 Spyderhawk even more!

Hey there brother don't be swayed by public opinion. Because the politically correct crowd would ban us from owning a Caly Jr if they had their way about things. Frankly I don't give hoot what the brainwashed masses say or think about any of the blades or any other tools I own for that matter.

Here's what you have to not lose sight of brothers & sisters>> A knife irrespective of what type of a knife or what design it has is nothing but a "TOOL". It is a tool designed for certain cutting jobs period. The politically correct crowd would love to ban the Aqua Salt kitchen knife if you gave those spineless goons their way about it.

But we here at Spyderville are real men and real women and we are responsible enough to own and use any type of knife we deem necessary to do our work with.

A Corvette with a 400 HP engine is not politically correct either>> but in the hands of responsible adults there is absolutely nothing morally wrong owning or driving one. You can hurt yourself just as bad with a kitchen knife that you can purchase at rip-mart or Bed, Bath & Beyond just as well as you can with a Hawkbill.

We're all adults!! we're not kids!!>> and doggone it we want a new Hawkbill!!!!

not everyone faces carry restrictions that would impact a knife like the spyderhawk... and people who do live in places that are more restrictive (like cities) are less likely to "need" a big hawkbill, anyway.

for people working outdoors, people living in rural communities, people working in the marine industry, the SD crowd... and many, many, many more... this knife will be a very welcome addition to spyderco's lineup.

personally, i'm more than ready to stock up on H1 spyderhawks... :D

my vote would likely be for an FRN or stainless (think angled drying vents like on the dialex/adventura), shaped like the superhawk. the balanced angles look good for control and the tip on the merlin/harpy/spyderhawk while mean-looking is more likely to stick or get nicked when pulling straight out of, say, a block of good hardwood. i want H-1 and the 50/50 choil. that would do it for me. maybe a middle ground on the angle of the tip of the blade would satisfy all?

I love my merlin and I intend to get a tasman salt soon but I need a choil on it.

btw I would buy almost any new spydie hawkbill as soon as i could afford it.

Hello "defenestrate">> It's already been decided that the H-1 Spyderhawk will be an FRN handle just like the original VG-10 Spyderhawk was. Now the drying vents I',m sure will be a consideration. I see that it's been a while since you posted last. I highly encourage you to read this thread along with about 4 other Hawkbill threads we've been feeding and watering.

Trust me there is a great undercurrent of fellow Hawkbill lovers that are on the same page. Just look at how many brothers have the H-1 Spyderhawk on their signature part of their profile. The people are speaking!! they want a new Hawkbill.

I couldn't agree more - I have lurked and watched the hawkbill threads from time to time as the hawk is my favorite EDC as well-I am fine with FRN-drying vents could perhaps make the handle too light/weak in FRN but with steel liners it would hold up and that way you'd get the salt water/etc out more quickly and it could add a striking uniqueness to the design. maybe like the directional texture of the FRN natives? with concentric drying holes?

all i ask is a finger choil and H1 steel. the rest is not as important to me. try cutting wires under a car in the dark when you put your thumb up to brace and ouch-your thumb is in the serrations. nasty. that is why i am adamant about a 50/50 choil.
