Flash for D90

#1

Post by PayneTrain »

With all the good photographers here, I thought this may be a good place to ask. I have a Nikon D90, and I need a flash. I'm majorly confused by the compatibility of all the various models, mostly the older ones. My first instinct is to get a SB-600, but even that is really more than I need so I'm looking at the older models like the SB-28(or DX) and such, but I'm wondering just how they work with the D90 or similar interfaces.

I understand no i-TTL compatibility, but what does that mean? I get the impression that you pretty much have to use it in manual mode, but what about the camera? Can that still be in P, A, or S, or does it have to be in M as well? I really don't mind setting the flash power manually, but I'm worried about it restricting what I can do with my camera. Anyone have any experience with this stuff and care to...shed some light on this for me?
