Kids and medicine these days

Grandson Jackson is spending the night so my son & daughter in law can go out. I think I used to go out on new year's eve but it's a vague memory. :) Anyway, Jackson has been sniffling a little so I was giving him some medicine (grape flavor). After I shot the medicine into his mouth he immediately said "CAN I HAVE SOME MORE?". I don't remember one time when I was a kid the medicine I had to take ever tasting good. In fact I could have a fever of 200 degrees and swear I felt fine just so I didn't have to take medicine. :) If kids just knew how good they have it in the medicine department. There hasn't been one type or brand of medicine that Jackson hasn't liked the taste of. It's good for the kids but it's a blessing for the adults. I remember when my son was a kid and the struggling we had to do to get him to open his mouth. :) I had a friend when I was in the Air Force that had several brothers and/or sisters. He told me that when it was one of the kids turn for the medicine the others would chase him or her down and hold them. :D Then one of the "chasers" became the "chasee" until everyone got dosed. :)

Going in the opposite direction, as someone who had to to take an awful lot of nasty tasting stuff sixty years ago when I was a kid, I scratch my head when younger adults voluntarily drink Jaegermeister. I was offered it at a party once, accepted, took one tiny sip, and visions of paregoric came flooding back into my head. Even the fruit flavored stuff back then was terrible. It's the reason still refuse to eat or drink anything cherry flavored.

Paul, Didn't paregoric taste like Anise? I seem to recall it. I had to take it when I had scarlet fever and was throwing up blood and the world was spinning. My mother was a RN and didn't believe in medecine like antibiotics, or doctors appointments. I never saw one until my Army physical and I had my share of stitches ( butterflys), breaks wrap up the limb tight and send me off to school. :) Never realized I had allergies and needed stuff for stomach acid like tums as generally both my parents believed in ridicule and such as alternative medicine to doctors with their things they called bills. In fact, until I was about 10 I thought there were some people coming to take us to the poor house, whoever "they" were and wherever the "poor house" was.

Looking back at things from an adults perspective it's apparent living through, or growing up in the depression had a very large impact during the formative years of my parents generation. Things like burnt motor oil to get rid of the rash from fleas the dog had "It's mange, this is spoiling him, my father would shoot him to put him out of his misery", plus the "I worked 11 hours a day picking potatoes for 5 cents and had to walk 5 miles to and from work".

I wanted to join the cub scouts but couldn't because of those **** guys waiting to take us to the poor house means I couldn't afford uniforms. :)

Lots of good things from that. I learned to run organic gardens and mulch piles, build up topsoil on top of clay, proper use and care of tools, etc. I learned excuses made things worse and lies were worse yet. Some good things. I could make a batch of wine, or vinegar, pickles, sauerkraut, etc. by the time I was 7 or 8.

If I ever run into "those poor house" guys I'm gonna have some words with them though!

I agree, Jack. But I worry that it makes it easier for kids to OD on meds when they taste just like candy and soda pop. I wonder if that's become a problem?

I've thought about that before. My grandson would sneak a drink of these medicines as quick as we think of kids sneaking a cookie. We all grew up learning to keep cleaning products out of the reach of children. Now we need to include medicines in that group. I've never thought about an actual over-dose though. More along the lines of going to get the medicine when he needs it and the bottle be empty. :)

Guys used to drink generic Robitussin to get wasted when I was a teen :eek:

I dunno man, some of the cough medicines are pretty nasty these days. Generic Robitussin comes to mind..

My personal favorite was the pink stuff the doctors prescribed for ear infections. That was the one time I was actually happy to take my medicine.

Yup. Bubble gum flavor Amoxicillian. My little loved the taste of it.

That's the stuff. I don't think they use it as much these days, but man was it good.

It's funny, but up until a few years ago, I didn't realize you weren't supposed to swallow chloraseptic throat spray. You're supposed to spray, swish, and spit. No wonder it used to work so well, I was practically drunk by the time I finished using it. :D

I remember Cheracol D, Vicks 44 - I would cringe at just seeing the bottle or box even if I wasn't sick.
For the sore throat - those black awful throat drops.
Then after the medicain having to have vapor rub on the chest, and under the nose. :eek:
The prescription medicine wasn't any better.
