Sheath retention/neck carry...

#1

Post by mb1 »

I have ZERO experience with either Kydex or Boltaron sheaths. I'm wondering if I should be concerned at all with neck carrying a Swick. I'm sure when I get my hands on one I'll be able to gauge my confidence in the sheath retention.

Has anyone had any bad surprises with a neck knife coming out of the sheath unexpectedly? I have seen some safety mods with a quick release buckle strap. I don't know if these are being overly cautious or what.

I'm really asking this because my wife thinks she would like to neck carry some. So then it's beyond me being confident and aware. I need to know she will stay safe.

I have not had a single instance of the Swick 3 coming free of the kydex sheath I have. It has been carried vertically from the neck while fishing and hiking as well as horizontally from the belt on several work days.

You should have nothing to worry about. If it is a swick with a sheathpro sheath I would say so with confidence. The retention on mine is supurb.

The eBay kydex sheath for my Swick3, as well as the factory SheathPro kydex sheath that came with my Swick4, are both very sturdy and tight fitting. The only thing that would sway me away from neck carrying would be the amount of force it actually takes to remove the knife... almost like a reverse choke. When I neck carry, I have to use two hands or a thumb to pop the knife free. A quick yank will break it out, but you won't have any issues at all with it falling out due to gravity or swinging around

Thanks for the input. That sounds pretty secure.

The Swick 4 will be my first Swick and my first synthetic sheath experience. Looking fwd to trying both.

Check out http://www.halperntitanium.com for handle scales. Very high quality, fairly inexpensive, and looks better (IMHO) than paracord wrapping

I have two of the Halpern G-10 handles for my Swick 3 & 4 and will say they are awesome. Fit and quality are second to none.

Thanks. I actually found that the other day when I was sheath hunting for the Swick 3 possibility and ran across that. Nice looking product there. So many options.

Sheathpro and Halpern are fantastic off the shelf options.

I can't imagine my swick ever falling out of the sheathpro I have for it. They do fantastic work and have gotten my business for all of my mules and swicks.

I don't have a swick but I carry either a Manbug or D'fly2 in a kydex neck sheath almost all the time. Just be careful when re-sheathing the knife. I decided to neck carry small folders because I was afraid I'd poke myself in the chest. :) I have come to love neck sheath carry. It's the easiest way to get to a knife I've found. For EDC sometimes I drop it under my shirt when in public. I forget that a lot though and havn't had any negative looks or comments. Will you be using the Swick for EDC or just for certain activities?

One feature some kydex sheaths have is a sliding screw/bolt that can be moved to adjust the tension. My sheaths were made by a friend on this forum. I have made scales for my Manbug and they change how the knife fits in the kydex. I have a heat gun and the guy who made them said you can heat the kydex with the knife in it and then (while it's hot) smash it between two pieces of foam or something soft to mold the kydex around the shape of the knife with slightly different scale shape. Sometimes I leave new scales thicker than the original ones. Just food for thought on the tension. I don't know any more than that about kydex but I assume if I heated the kydex a little and not compress it the tension could be loosened. But I'd check with people who make kydex sheaths before trying something like that. FYI, there is special foam to use when making kydex sheaths.
