Which flipper?

So as you may know I have a Military and SB Caly in the mail.

Currently I am using a non Spyderco knife that has the Kit Carson flipper.

While I look forward to finally owning a knife made with top quality parts and attention to detail in the fit and finish I am going to miss playing with my flipper.

So Domino or Southard?

I am use to carrying big knives so size is not a issue and am currently sitting on some disposable income so price isn't a factor.

Which would you buy and why?

I had my local shop order both for me to check out. I stood for a solid hour playing with both, I left with the Southard.

Partly because of the steel, but mostly because of the ergonomics, blade length/size/angle/shape, I preferred the G10 over the CF, and overall I felt like the Southard was "more special feeling". The biggest thing I didn't like with the Domino is the blade shape, or more specifically that the tip isn't lower on the blade like the Manix is.

So, all very opinionated reasons, which is probably all you'll get since both are pretty much on par with each other but different in enough ways to make it a tough choice.

LOVE mine something about the domino that stops me pulling the trigger on one but this is defo a keeper :D :D

I voted for the Southard which I own. The steel is premium and the whole knife has a quality feel to it. All the edges and corners are smooth. The flipper action is super smooth. I've had mine since they first came out and the lockup hasn't moved at all.

I'm sure the Domino is a great knife on its own but I cannot comment on it since I don't have one nor have I handled one.

I own both but would have to recommend the Domino. Ymmv though. The reasons being that I prefer the nice and thin ffg blade on the domino. The flipping action is better on my domino than the southard. Normally that's not a reason I would include but since you mentioned it above I thought I would throw that in. Of course, it could just be the southard I own that doesn't flip so well. Then there is the ergos. The domino is probably one of the most comfortable knives I own. It's like a more refined manix. The southard on the other hand is downright uncomfortable (for me). I own the blue domino so the steel is the same on both models, and yes I prefer the blue G10 over the cubic carbon fiber of the original.

But like I said, ymmv.

The Domino is my first Spyderco flipper, in fact its the first knife I've owned with a kit carson inspired flipper.
But it will ultimately come down to personal preference, I prefer ffg blades.

Either way I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Both are great knives. The Domino is much easier for me to open by Spydie-hole, but both models flip quite well. I have all 3 varieties of Domino, plus the Dice and Southard. I also have a ZT-0560 flipper for comparison. I don't think you can go wrong either way, just a matter of preferences. Seems like a number of folks who got the Southard have also sprung for a 3rd-party clip. The factory one does have a pretty sharp protrusion.

The Southard handle seems to fit my hand better on odd days, the Domino fits better on even days :D. I'd suggest holding one before ordering if possible (that might convince you to get both though :)).

I have both and prefer the Domino over the Southard at the moment, more specifically the blue G10 domino. Didn't care much for the CF Domino and actually sold that one in favor of the southard, but the blue G10 and CTS-204P put this one over the top as my favorite EDC these days. The main thing that sets the domino over the southard for me are the ergonomics. I prefer knives with forward choils and the domino just melts into my hand like it was custom made for me.

EDIT: Another upside to the domino is that there are a number of deep carry clips readily available. This is not an issue for some but it is a big deal for me.

I held both and didn't really groove on the ergos of the Southard. I prefer the thinner FFG blade on the Domino (There is a version in 204P now which is what the Southard uses, but I'm personally loving XHP) and I prefer having a real finger choil.

I have both, and both are very nicely made. But I prefer the Domino. It's thinner in pocket, flips better, and cuts much better in my experience.

I like both, but I deflipped my Domino since I much prefer to use the hole for opening and the flipper was a nuisance when closing it.
The Southard is more different than the Domino to what you have so I'd go with the Southard (it needs a better clip though..)
