Manix 2 question

#1

Post by zippofanatic »

I am in the market to get a manix 2. I have wanted one for almost 2 years but I have always found some other knife I wanted more because the manix 2 is on the larger size compared with what I normally carry (DF or persistence). Well I have decided to finally pull the trigger. My question is should I get the Lightweight with bd1, the normal manix 2, or the new s110v manix 2. I was originally going to go with the lightweight because I love the color of the handles, I like that is isn't too heavy, and I like ffg, but now I noticed the normal manix is also ffg. Then the s110v manix came out and I was leaning toward that but my sharpening skills are not very good and I hear it is pretty hard to sharpen. I will add that I currently use a sharpmaker and I might be getting an edge pro soon.

So what do you all recommend? I don't really use any of my knives hard because I really don't have a whole lot to cut on a daily basis. I am also not really convinced I need a "super steel" but I love the handles and I hear bd1 has pretty bad edge retention. And for only about $30 you can get s110v, but im not sure I would be able to sharpen it and I would have to wait until one is available (which could be a while).

Thoughts?

IMO BD1 just isn't worth it...S110V isn't hard to sharpen, it just takes patience because it is a much harder steel and so will require a lot more passes. As long as you know how to put a good edge on a knife and have more than 30 seconds to sharpen, no worries. Plus if your use is light hten S110V will stay sharp quite a loooong time.

+1!

I handled both a regular g-10 Manix and the older lightweight at a store a while ago. While I like frn knives, for some reason I didn't take to the frcp right away. I guess I preferred the feel and heft of the g-10 version on a knife this size. After some consideration, I decided to hold out for a sprint since you get a different color g-10, a different steel (I have a lot of s30v already), and a "mid-weight" version with the skeletonized liners.

I've had the Cruwear sprint for a couple of weeks now and I am happy that I waited.

I voted S110v, but I support the thinking of my fellow Manix lovers. If you can find a Cru wear sprint, get it!

S110v would be my vote for you. This stuff is nice, hard, durable and will take a wonderfully sharp edge and hold it for a long time. As was mentioned above, sharpening is more a matter of patience than anything else. To me, it's worth the trouble because this is a great knife in both design & simplicity. I didn't think I would like the size & heft, but the S110v version is really a nice knife to pocket carry. It isn't too heavy or big.

See my sig ;)

It impresses me more every time I use it. I'm still biased to the feel of G10 but the fact that FRN shows wear less is a nice trade off. One random detail I've noticed a lot lately is how the texture at the butt of the handle gives amazing traction when pulling the knife out of your pocket. If you had greasy/oily hands you still wouldn't have any trouble pulling it out even with a deep carry clip. Ironically I think I would like the FRN much more if it were cast completely smooth like the Centofante knives, that way I could grind and tweak the shape to my liking without interrupting the texture pattern. That would likely sway my favor to FRN over G10.

Don't start with the hardest steel and/or lightest handle. Start with the excellent S30V-G10 combination nearest the original Manixes. Then you'll be ready to gauge whether the harder/lighter versions are actual improvements of the Manix2 (I still regret not having any original Manixes to gauge how the Manix2 improves them...)

While I love S110V and respect FRN, S30V ain't no slouch and G10 is wonderfully spare.

Voted for s110v best bang for the buck, but I do prefer the Cruwear sprint its milled out liners helped on the weight a little and I am liking the cruwear steel a lot. But again it is more $$$ but you get G10 and you can take it apart if necessary.

I would get the s110v frn version. Amazing bang for your buck and I like the weight for its size

I'm going to go against the grain and say bd-1. It is an amazing knife and will allow you to home your sharpening skills.
I can get mine scary sharp with very little effort and find that edge last just fine for normal use. I even used mine to remove a house worth's of carpet. It needed attention but ten minutes later was ready for another house's carpet. The bright blue handle is nice and unique and once you know you can sharpen at will you will locate more things to cut. I think the original lightweight is an in-sung hero. Truly regardless of what you get from your list you will acquire an awesome knife. I am also going to recommend old school free hand sharpening, in my estimation. There is nothing like doing it yourself.
Cheers

Hey,

I voted for the G10 S30V. Why? Because you said that you are new to sharpening, there is quite a step from S30V to S110V. But honestly, I just love the Manix. Just get one and be happy ;)

Another way to look at it is, start with 110 and once you have that mastered there aren't many steels out there you won't be able to easily sharpen.

Or just buy a decent diamond plate ;) Both great knives. The FRN Lightweigt models are way lighter than the G10 models. Get both :P

None of the choices that you have listed.

Cruwear! This is a very tough steel, and the Manix is designed to be a tough, hard use knife. Plus, since it's a sprint, the liners are lighter. I also like the G10 better than FRN.

The S110V is only in stock at BBS ($135 + shipping), and if you search around, that's how much some of the Cruwear Manixes have been going for.

IMHO, I'd go for the Sprint version first, then the S110V. Sprints have a way of selling out quickly and the aftermarket prices can go pretty high. Just my 0.02.

If you wait for them to come back into stock the S110V LtWt is the best bang for the buck - you should be able to get it for about $105 US.
