I bought a Spyderco Des Horn a week ago. I really like the knife and think it makes a great gentleman's knife. However, I do not like a clip on a gentleman's knife. The clip is attached via the pivot screw. The problem is, when you remove the clip, the pivot screw will then not tighten enough to center the blade. It needs that extra 1/64" that the wire clip gives to tighten against the scale. Without the clip, the blade rides the scale opposite the lock. No amount of adjustment will pull the blade off that scale. Put the clip in, and it centers right up.
What I did, was cut the 2 ends off the clip with wire cutters and put them in the recessed area for the wire clip. Then, tighten the pivot screw, and the blade centers. While doing all this, I managed to lose the pivot screw. Guess I will give Spyderco a call tomorrow and purchase another pivot screw. I'm just frustrated about the fact that the knife will not function properly without the clip attached. I have purchased about 30 Spyderco's and this is the first that I've felt was not designed correctly.

Aside from not losing the screw, I found the same thing out myself on the Des Horn. I agree that, given its "gent's knife" nature, either omitting the clip or providing a washer/spacer or additional, shorter, pivot screw would have been nice. However, since they're now on Sierra's site, I'm guessing they're already out of production and headed for next year's disco list, so changes are unlikely.

Very sorry about the screw, what a bummer. I dealt with the same disappointment (the issue with how it performs with clip gone) and want to offer a slight variation in the solution. The Deacon wrote:Aside from not losing the screw, I found the same thing out myself on the Des Horn. Instead of cutting the clip, I cut a very small piece of black rubber-coated wire (I think it was black chicken wire, maybe 1.5mm? - it was roughly the same thickness as the clip wire). Using needle nose pliers, I shaped it into a small circular washer that wraps around the base of the screw. On my knife, it's been more than enough to hold everything in place perfectly, and without the clip. Whoo hoo!
(I love it without the clip. Even my wife noticed the Des Horn - 'that's a cool knife,' she said.)
Good idea. Thank you!Barkdog wrote:Very sorry about the screw, what a bummer. I dealt with the same disappointment (the issue with how it performs with clip gone) and want to offer a slight variation in the solution.
