A question for our lord and savior, Sal Glesser.

Spyderco openend my eyes to the beauty of production folders,
custom makers, styles, blade steels, etc.
I now own 30+ Spyderco's and I will make the family grow were I can.
Every single Spyderco has something that makes it stand out on it's own turf,
and I'm proud and happy with each and every Spyderco I own.

Hence my question, what model are you the proudest of?

Hi Dutchblades,

Chudemoeche.

Thanx much for the kind words, but you'll have to drop the lord and saviour stuff. I'm just another knife junky.

I don't think that one makes me more proud than another. We work on all of them until we're satisfied that they model serves the intended purpose and is as good as we can make it. When we learn of changes or improvements, we do those as well....to all of them.

We must now call the good guys "heros", and refer to heros as "gods". It's just inflation.

At least the question wasn't about King Sal's LEAST favourite model!

Sal's just a human...very humble, but a guy just like everyone else here...

thanks Sal for setting that aright so quickly :spyder: :)

Sal is a great guy, thank you Sal for Spyderco and the knives and tools and everything.

I have a related question: do you consider the Caspian Salt to be one of your best and/or better designs? I have to admit, I love that knife, though I don't own one. I collect pictures of the pointed version.

This may sound odd but I considered writing a small book devoted to the H-1 Steel knives and Salt line. What do you think, Sal, and others? I would ofcourse want Spyderco's permission, and I would want to have text information, and pictures.

Hi SEF,

The Caspian was a nice design, but actually it was part of a model development that began with the SPOT, which was based on Fred Perrin's index finger hole as part of the handle. The latest in that model development is the Swick3 model. The Perrin Finger Hole permitted holding onto the knife while still using your fingers (not having to put the knife down) and it also made if very difficult to drop the knife or have it taken from you. As we continue to make short runs of the model, we refine it. I think we're close with the Swick3. Halpern is making handles for the Swick3 and SheathPro is making sheaths. The next run (leaf blade Swick3) will come with pocket sheaths.

Books are complicated and that concept would haved to be discussed with management. I would suggest if you want to follow up, contact Peter Jhones, our R&D manager and legal consultant. (peterj@spyderco.com)

I like my Swick3 a lot. It's nice to be able to pull rope off a spool with the Swick3 in a reverse grip with my pinky in the finger hole and not having to even set it down when pulling out and cutting multiple rope slings...I'll definitely be down for a leaf bladed Swick3, and if it comes with a sheath from the factory all the better.

To the OP...I'd imagine Sal is proud of how well his company has done over the years (Since well before I was born) and the firsts his company pioneered like the round opening hole facilitating easy one handed opening, and the pocket clip...they've certainly carved out a niche in the knife market, and are THE company to go to regarding different steel, handle, and lock varieties...and some of the best and most consistent heat treatments and quality control in the industry. I wouldn't refer to Sal as the Lord and Saviour (Only one one of those for us Christians), or King Sal as that seems a bit much (No offence intended to Sal), but I'd absolutely have no qualms whatsoever referring to him as a fantastic and quintessential example of an entrepreneur and a man who has an undisputed passion for doing what he loves...making awesomely designed cutting implements for those of us who value the greatest tool mankind has ever invented, even before mastering fire. If I had to guess as to his favourite knife designs...I'd look to the models that bear his signature. All I have to say is this:

Keep up the SUPERB work Sal and Co.!!!
All Glory To The Hypno-Toad

Hey Sal, I always where a h1 folder clipped to a cord on my neck when I'm fishing; usually something small like a dragonfly or tasman. For many of the reasons you mentioned, I have often thought that the swick looked like it might work really well as a small boat knife worn in neck sheath. With no handle or moving parts I'm sure it would be pretty simple to keep the s30v rust free, but I have often thought that this would be a neat design to do in h1. Any thoughts?

I don't know if it's worth the hassle of a dead tree book, but a series of interviews with Sal, Eric, etc where they talk about each knife one by one would be bound to be fascinating.

For all the people getting way too excited over the misuse of "lord and saviour"... It was a joke, I don't depict Sal as a god, just as an awesome person.

Keep up the great work! :D

Thanx DutchBlades.

Gringo,

If the Swick3 is well received, I wouldn't mind chasing an H1 version.

Time for opinions, what blade shape would be best for an H1 version keeping in mind that it has to be hollow ground?

Another suited H1 knife would be the Endura. Loads of people (including myself) carry the Endura with high frequency. Especially close to the sea or in a humid climate, H1 on this edc legend would be awesome.

I know the difficulties of the Millie being a USA made knife, but an H1, fully serrated Millie would be pretty friggin cool.

Considering where H1's most known strengths lie, how about the old style naval jack-knife blade shape - kind of reverse tapered, snub nosed wharncliffe, perhaps with a line cutter and/or section of spyderedge on the reverse.

I'll get my coat ......
