Question re: Police

#1

Post by chux »

Having just received a CF Police I was rather surprised at how thick the knife is. I was considering getting a G-10 or SS version to use but was a little put off by the size. Are the SS and G-10 versions as thick as the CF? My assumption was that the SS version at least would be thinner as it doesn't neet the liners, is this the case?

The early G-10 version had no liners at all and are probably the thinnest. They also had a hollow-ground blade instead of the current flat-ground blade.
The current G-10 has one liner on the clip size.

I don't know how thick it is compared to the SS version.

Hi Chux
By my measurements the C/F Police is 10.5 mm thick and the S/S version is 7.5 mm. In the hand the stainless feels quite a bit thinner but it is noticeably heavier. Haven't handled a G10 Police unfortunately - reckon I'd like it though

My SS Police is exactly 0.395 thick, it's quite a bit slimmer than the G-10 or the C/F versions. Happy new year everyone, Ron

Using a thicker stainless handle really adds weight.

From my trusty Mitutoyo dial caliper:

Stainless 0.300 in (Ron, you might check your number on this one...)

Carbon fiber 0.415 in

G10 0.428 in

While it's true that the SS Police does weigh more than the CF Police, I like that added weight as it gives the Police model a very solid, well-balanced feel.

I'm surprised the G-10 version is thicker than the CF, I had expected them to be the same size. However it is probably a bit lighter than the SS. Sometimes you want a light knife, other times you want something with a slim profile, I'm curious now and the only way around it is to buy both :D

My SS Police mics out at 0.284 in. Lots of variation here.

Ron,

Please MAKE SURE that you don't have too much of the Crown Royal "on board" while you're addressing that package that you are sending to me tomorrow!.

Checked w/my caliper. My CF comes to just shy of 11mm(say 10.8 or 10.9)and just shy of 14/32",or about .42". My linerless G-10 comes to just shy of 10mm(say 9.9)and just a hair over 3/8",or about .39". This isn't the highest quality caliper(it's a 'sliderule' type),so YMMV.
