spyderco manix 2 s110v: Heavy Duty User?

#1

Post by jmfwsu »

Hi,

Would the spyderco manix 2 s110v still be considered a heavy duty user even though it is lightweight? Does the handle have any steel reinforcement inside, or is it all plastic? Just trying to determine what it could be used for.

Thanks for the help,
Jason

There is a bit of steel reinforcing around the pivot and lock area, the rest is FRN. It's a very tough construction. Don't use it as a pry bar and you should be fine. Trust me on this one :D

I'd say you could definitely use it for any task that could be successfully performed by an S110V fixed blade of the same basic dimensions and hardness. Or, to put it another way, odds are that you'd break the blade before you'd break the handle.

It can be used for everything a knife should be used for. It is not a prybar, though.

Literally. Don't pry with it, don't baton with it, don't use it as a screwdriver. For all other cutting chores it'll be just fine. I've been using mine for everything including things I normally wouldn't use my knife for like cutting zip ties and it hasn't let me down. I picked up my Southard the other day and it felt like a lead weight...you definitely get spoiled by the lightweight. Also consider the recent thread showing that the blade will likely snap before the handle or pivot give out, so being lightweight seems to be all good with practically no downside other than some superficial flexing in the pivot.

This has already been discovered by accident. It seems that the handle is a lot stronger than you might think.

Anything you could do or would want to do with S30V or 154CM you could do with S110V.

It depends on what you mean by "heavy duty". The FRN grips are unlikely to be the weak point. I saw a VG-10 sabre-ground Endura crack right through the center of the blade and the handle was fine. It is difficult to overload the handle unless you do something odd to be able to put force right on the end of it like walk on it or similar.
