I'm pretty partial to the CRKT Tao pen. This is about what I paid - http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-River-Kn ... B0033HBFW4 - looks great, very solid, black coating has not warn at all, and it comes with a Fisher Space Pen cartridge.

I also have a Schrade tactical like this - http://www.bladehq.com/item--Schrade-Ta ... Tool--8191 - not as pretty IMO (I think this was the only color when I bought but there are others) - stock ballpoint cartridge is cheap and unreliable, but it also has a fountain tip which is not bad. Furthermore, it is pretty stout - mine has a couple of small dings from when I had a flat and had to use it as a jack handle - it worked!

Hoping to start working on a couple of ideas for stout, affordable pens.

I personally like the Zebra 701. For about $8 you get a solid, very smooth writing pen.

I can't imagine me being okay with a screw on cap. Is it terrible or is it not so terrible?

It's the reason I still have not purchased an Investigator pen yet. I really wanted to get one many times, but I have no time for screw caps.

My wife is an RN, Zebra ball points and Sharpie markers are her favorites.

I am constantly using my pen for field notes and such. I found that the Investigator pen wasn't all that comfortable to use plus it got to be pain to keep screwing on and off all the time.

My vote goes for just the basic Fisher Space Pen in Bullet form. Such an awesome compact package in the pocket and also fit great in the hand for writing. Plus no screwing! :p

I dunno. I kind of like the screw caps. Maybe they give me something to do with my hands when I'm in boring meetings at the office...

My two favorites are the Cross Townsend and the original Smith & Wesson M&P. One is "classy", the other "tactical", but they're both fairly fat and hefty. I actually prefer the M&P because the knurling provides a better grip and the Parker gel refills work better for me than the Cross gels. It's also one of the few tactical pens I've seen where the cap snaps firmly on both ends.

I'd rate it as worse than pens like my Cross and S&W where the cap snaps firmly into place in both the open and closed position, but not nearly as bad as a lot of tactical pens where the cap only snaps on in the closed position so you wind up having to hold it, or rest it somewhere, while you're writing.
