Brand New ENDURA has EDGE NICK: What should I do everyone?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

I just received a brand new Spyderco Endura (Saber Grind, Plain Edge) from a very good and reputable seller, but, I was looking over the edge..and there is an almost imperceptible slight nick/tiny notch in the edge, partly down from the point. Should I go through the trouble of sending it back if I can, for a replacement, or should I just keep it, and perhaps sand or sharpen the nick away? What would you all do? Has anyone here ever had that happen/received a knife with that?

I might take a picture of it if I can and post it here.

If it were me, I would probably sharpen it. I would end up sharpening it shortly anyways.

You can email the seller and ask them what they think you should do.

X3, if it is, as you say, almost imperceptible, it's not worth the time and hassle to send it back. Use it, sharpen it, repeat.

Sounds like you've got an actual user on your hands. I've only come across a few of these, as evidenced by my knife collection vs how many I carry!

Is it going to need hours of reprofiling or a dozen swipes on a stone?

Out of the 6 spydercos I've bought new, everyone of them had slight imperfections.

2 from Golden, 2 from Seki, 1 from Moki, 1 From China.

These aren't CRK's or Hinderers or Southards, ect...

My advice? Unless your looking for a safe queen. Use your endura as if it is a tool, a knife. Don't send it back.

Sharpen it man, spend 10 minutes sharpening or spend 8 days having it swapped over?

You probably spent more time making this thread than it'll take to remove this "almost imperceptible" nick.

Use it hard and make a few more knicks in it, and then sharpen it clean!!

my knives rarely go long without getting dings, knicks, chips, or rolls on the edges. in my opinion this is like saying you bought a new car and one of the tires was ten pounds low on pressure, should you send it in or pump up the tire?

I don't disagree with anyone in the Keep It, Sharpen It camp, but let's not be so quick to dismiss SpyderEdge's concerns either. On a practical level, dealers should know when their products have flaws. Sure, it happens to even the most reputable. And while what I know about the business world wouldn't fill up a juice glass, I'm pretty sure that maintaining a high level of quality control depends on customer feedback.

On a less practical level, I also understand the disappointment of unboxing a coveted new blade only to find something wrong with it. Call me shallow (go ahead – I'll wait), but it takes away a little bit of the rush. It seems safe to say that anyone who takes the time and effort to join a forum is a collector to some extent. And collectors, almost by definition, like to receive the objects of their obsession in a pristine state, even if they aren't going to stay that way for long. The fact that we're talking about a readily available Endura is irrelevant.

Just a roundabout way of saying that I sympathize with the mindset behind the question.

I'm not sure dealers are opening every single box and checking knives before selling them. I feel this would fall into the Spyderco QC area. If it has a flaw it shouldn't make it out of the factory in Seki, but then "almost imperceptible" is the important part of this topic.

Great point. But looking at it from another angle, that's all the more reason for customers to speak up: because dealers can't open every single box. In theory, a series of complaints would eventually reach the source through dealers. (Fortunately, it's not a problem Spyderco users have to contend with often.)
