My Calypso Jr.'s

#1

Post by fredswartz »

This is from an older thread. Lots of good pics.

McHenrytl's post inspired me to post a pic of my Calypso Jr.s. I have all nine that were produced with exception of a few that may exist in myth only. All are NOS with boxes except for the SS PE which was refurbished by Spyderco.
I have many more Spyderco's but don't we all. This isn't a great picture
but then I am not a great photographer. Roman helped get me started with a NIB Experimental Micarta SE model.

Awesome collection. I gather that you are collecting Spyderco's new Calypso models? I have a UKPK and love it. :)

I have some of the newer Calypso knives but these are all the original Calypso Jr. knives with no SS liners. As you probably know the blades tend to drift as the FRN on some of them can't compete against the pressure of the clips. Luckily all the blades on the knives that I have are centered and with the SS and Micarta knives that ceases to be a problem.

Jerry,
This is very nice set of Calypsos.
Did you have a chance to use your Caly3? IIRC, you were planning on this last summer, I just forgot to ask. You know, this is one my favorites. :) She is also Caly family.

Dennis:

Beautiful photography! I wish that I could emulate it.

Roman: I carried the Caly 3 for a while and then went back to
the modified H1 Salt. Old habits die hard. I still carry the modified
Dragonfly and as usual a small SAK for every other task.

asking for more. Great knife .

Very nice collection! I didn't know they made one in Micarta, I'll have to start hunting for that one. The ZDP one is one of my favorite to carry.

I'm glad you brought this up, great pics!

I'd love to see a pic of the Jr. with a UKPK/Caly 3 and the Chaparral if anyone has one.

C52P was hardest Calypso Jr. to find. I had nearly given up until I saw this knife on eBay that looked like a C52P.
I got it for next to nothing because it had a British Land Rover commemorative logo on the scales. It had never been used
but had carry marks. I buffed off the logos, sent it to Spyderco and they
restored it to like new condition. Collection complete but no box.
It actually looks like an old C05 Economy but back then they all looked pretty much alike back then.

Were there any problems with the threaded inserts on these models?

Never any problems with any of these knives other than blade centering. As well as I remember I once bought 5 gray Calypso Jr.s at a great price and EDC'd one for 5 years in the most extreme conditions. I gifted or sold all but my EDC and then later sold it on some forum for 10 or 15 dollars. Just about indestructable but aren't most Spyderco's?
