gunting pocket carry ???

#1

Post by dogrunner »

this knife just fascinates me. As a former (a long time ago) student of Arnis I'm also intrigued by Bram's approach to MBC (and Mike J.'s too). I can see carrying a yojimbo (or any typical knife) clipped in pocket or IWB even, but the gunting, I just don't know. I read some old threads on this, but would like to know if anyone actually feels comfortable carrying a Gunting in a pocket - it's long, it's got that horn, and the clip appears placed so it rides high. Holster carry looks easier, except I don't like anything on my belt. It seems to me that the main reason to carry a folder is the convenience of carry - in (clipped on) a pocket, rather than sheath. Any thoughts, gunting owners ?

thanks

Hey runningdog! I carried my Gunting for quite some time. I never relly noticed it till I had to get something out of my pocket. It does ride high, but that is so it is easier to get out in a hurry. For EDC it is one stout blade and the horn does not interfere with anything I ever cut. For MBC, I have not trained with it yet so I can't help you out there.
Overall I found it comfortable to carry clipped it seems big put it carries flat if that makes any sense to you. Hope that helps. Take Care!!!

I carry one or 2 every day, and train with them, and Bram all the time. I feel completely confident with one in my pocket-I keep my wallet in the same pocket, and I've never had a problem. I do own a sheath, which I recently bough, but really, I'm all about pocket carry. The secret, for me, is your pants. I don't wear tight pants, and I mostly have slash pockets-that is, they are diagonal from the seam of the leg to the belt line. Khakis, and Carpenter jeans usually have this feature. It does ride a little high, but in the crunch, do you want more or less to grab? It's the only tip down knife I carry, because I feel it negates My problem with tip down-too much manipulation to put into action.YMMV, Joe

I usually use a sheath, but with some jeans I can use the "watch pocket" and it works just fine. Beware of reaching past the Gunting into a pocket, because the ramp can catch as your hand comes out of the pocket, and then the tip can bite you. I found it is best to remove the knife from the pocket first, if reaching for something deeper inside the pocket. This is not only true for the Gunting, but for other knives with waves, studs, and discs also.

I carried my G without a sheath (rear left, front right pocket, IWB) for all of one day.

The horn snagged on everything and kept opening up inadvertently. That knife is **** sharp enough I would not tolerate that at all.

So I ordered a custom-fit IWB sheath. I'll let yall know how it is.

I only carry mine in its holster. It's quicker to draw and it frees my pocket for all the other junk that I may lug around.

Before I purchased my G I thought that holster carry would be cumbersome but it turns out that it is more convenient for me. Whether you are sitting or standing it rides in the same position. Drawing a Gunting from your pocket in a seated position at speed is not that easy.

My holster is a J clip set up from Skunkworks so carrying it on track pants or even shorts is not a problem.

Before Sal introduced the now famous pocket clip and round hole, just about everyone carried their Buck 110 folding lockbacks in a leather pouch sheath affixed to their belt—this method still works today very well for many people. It’s an odd conundrum, the knife to me is beautifully conceived with its ramp and horns for multi threat level function and self defense, and shines in utilitarian usage, and yet, what makes it such an effective tool, is what makes it so @%@$#$ frustrating and difficult to carry as a ‘clipit’. So, in effect, I merely discarded the notion of pocket carry, and instead, relegated it to belt carry (yes, there are those that have no problem carrying it in their pocket, I'm just not one of them). In this manner It works very well for me, and it does indeed allow for access from just about any position, whether I’m standing or seated, without getting in the way.

thanks to everyone for your insights. Different things will work for different folks, but I have 2 problems with sheath carry (on a belt) - 1 is that at work I already get a lot of funny looks even carrying clipped discretely in a pocket (a delica or d'fly) and anything on a belt (even a leatherman) is viewed suspiciously; 2 is that I seem to have a tendency to snag on things carried in a belt sheath (drawer handles, screen door latches, branches), so I prefer pocket carry. Maybe I should pay more attention to where I'm going <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
So I was thinking maybe sheathed, but in a pocket sheath (or IWB). Or maybe it's too long even for a pocket... I'd like to experiment, but I don't have a gunting yet, or a sheath.
still thinking about it...

I tried the Gunting in my pocket but hated it. I also have a problem walking around with visible steel at work, so I keep my knives IWB, with an SS cricket in the pocket for sheeple work. I wear the Gunting in a custom holster from survival shealths (www.survivalsheath.com)in the car to/from work and when I'm at home. The holster is amazingly handy. I find myself using the Gunting for all manner of quick chores, even when I'm in the kitchen surrounded by knives.

Sending some holsters and at least couple of Pocket Rockets for the Gunting to Vince at Omega Tactical today. He should have them by Friday and he has "first dibs" on the next batch of Pocket Rockets being made, so he'll have them in stock for Christmas.
