Spyderco Bayonet?

I would like to see some type of combat knife from Spyderco that is either a version or a different take on the military's M9 Bayonet. Maybe more fixed blade combat/fighting type knives in general would be good too.

To put into my WROL kit, to use as utility/survival knife, and for use as a bayonet on my long gun. I'd also take it with me when I go camping, trekking, etc. I'm sure some military guys who like Spyderco wouldn't mind carrying Spyderco quality over Ontario quality. And why not? It certainly would have its uses.

Not sure how it is now, but I know when I was in the Army we would not of been allowed to use a personally owned bayonet. When a training issue arose that required a bayonet, we would go to the arms room and sign for it. Once the training situation (usually a parade/formation) was over we would line back up at the arms room and turn it in. We were also not allowed to keep knives that were longer than the length of our hands in our barracks room. Pretty much eliminated most fixed blades I had at that time. Ended up keeping most of my knives off base at my girlfriend's (now wife) house.

Got to admit though, I do like the bayonet offered by Zero Tolerance. That said, I would not shell out the money for it. Only bayonet I'm interested in right now is the re-make Camillus did of the M1 Carbine bayonet. Just want one to go with my M1 Carbine. Hopefully no bayonet charges in my future. :)

Well PMCs could use them I'm sure. SWAT and Federal Special tactics teams could use them too. Just an idea. Of course it would have to be reasonably priced, as I am a lowly public safety dispatcher attending college for LE.

I think the warrior would serve as a more combative fixed blade, and as for a bayonet... I'm not sure if there's much of a market for it. I mean, they do seem to be less practical now. If you were to be in combat, I would think you'd use your rifle, then your pistol, and then transition back to your rifle for a bayonet? I'm just wondering about the applications it would serve -especially for the general public.

Why don't we just ask for a set of butter knives too? Lately it seems people just want things with a spyderco logo on them to have them... Maybe I'm just cranky

Already been done - the D3 Trainer is a perfect butter knife (really). Top left in the pic below your post.

Bayonets probably made more sense before high capacity magazines. Now that tool is competing for the weapon light's spot, right?

Really? I'd rather have a one piece butter knife. Rather not have to wash the pivot out on a trainer. How does it work with the holes for spreading jam?

I kind of like the idea, but doubt it would ever happen. I'd say people should take a look at Zero Tolerance's bayonet before they just turn up their noses at the idea. It's a slick looking knife that I think very effectively bridged the gap between a 'traditional' bayonet and a truly functional field knife. Sort of like the M9 was supposed to do but fell short of doing.

Like the ZT effort but turned my nose up at the price, looks like it would be a good utility blade but I question the design for bayonet use.

No holes in the D3 trainer.

Personally, I agree on food & folders - I wouldn't mix the two, but lots of people here do.

I would rather see spyderco make a large (9" blade and up) heavy duty fixed blade bowie knife rather than a bayonet, much more useful.

There may be some exception but bayonets seem to be universally poor knives. And if the U.S. Army has no use for a bayonet, why would a civilian?

I don't know what a PMC is but I'm not aware of any law enforcement agency that issues bayonets. Most cops seem to carry a mid-sized folder for utility purposes.

^ PMC is "Private Military Contractor/Company/Corporation*". Basically mercenaries but with more of a focus on security and supplying bases. Their good enough at their job, but there have been issues with them having the occasional bad apple or two doing some seriously bad stuff. The two most notable ones are the prisoner abuse in Abu Ghraib and the Blackwater Baghdad shootings. Granted those are the exception to the rule. They usually maintain weapons systems, escort convoys, and protect VIP's.

So yeah, those guys would use a bayonet.

* Same term for different things, more or less, but Contractor can imply singular members of the group.

When was the last time you saw entry teams using bayonets??? Bayonets are the antithesis of (to borrow an overused phrase) high speed/low drag. :rolleyes: Use of bayonets today is largely limited to ceremonial uses and, in general, they make pretty poor general purpose knives.

And if Spyderco were to make such a knife, the primary driver would be quality, not price.

Let's all just go back to trench warfare because somebody thinks bayonets are cool.
