sharpening hawkbill (spyderco superhawk)

#1

Post by Donzaucker »

Hello
I'd like sharpening my spyderco superhawk on wicked edge
So this is the question.
For hawkbill can I use all diamond stones (progression from 100 to 1000 grit), ceramic stones and leather strop or I have to use only ceramic stones?
Which angle degree I have to choose?
Would like to finish it mirror polish.
Thanks for your help

I don't know really anything about the wicked edge, but you can't really sharpen hawkbills with flat stones.

The shape of the blade does not dictate stone material. Feel free to use whatever stones you like. Be aware that thinner width stones will sharpen the hawkbill more efficiently and consistently, ex: the Sharpmaker-size rods are well-suited to sharpening hawkbills because of the small contact area.

Match the existing angle, usually around 30 degrees inclusive. Finish with a 40 degree microbevel if you feel like you need it (determined by use). VG10 does well at 25 degrees inclusive as long as you don't abuse it and maintain it well, and also takes a mirror edge easily as long as you are consistent with your pressure and have grits high enough to polish out visible scratches.
