Yeah, that guy had $200 for a knife but not $40 for a sharpmaker? Also, he clearly has no sense or he wouldn't drop off recurved blades for sharpening service. He got what he paid for and now he's mad he got what he paid for. Perhaps this will teach him how costly it is to not know how to keep your tools up yourself.

Not to rip on sharpening services, but most of the mall setups I've seen have been dismal at best with most of them using an electric wheel for what should be normal stone work.

That's horrible but the people on reddit are freaking hallarious... Take it to small claims court? I don't know where the OP is or where it took place but here in Ohio it costs $175 out of your pocket just to file the claim- that's up front possible months before any action happens and then its you going up against a licensed and bonded business with lawyer(s). Sure if you win they will owe you that $175 but for $25 more you would have the value of the knife now and not have all the hasle.

If I were you (and you don't have a lawyer on retainer who could send them a letter of demand) I would go back there right now, not in 2 days or a week, go back right now with a factory photo of what it should look like and speak with the owner and see if you can reach a deal, even if its just for 1/2 the value or he will pay 1/2 the cost of a replacement. The longer you wait the less likely you'll see a dime. It's a ****ty situation no doubt but if you get it in your mind you can just take a friendly approach to this problem you're in for a sore surprise.

Don't think I'm not extremely symphetic for you, I love my knives as much as anyone (which is one of the reasons I've put in the time to learn to sharpen myself), I'm just trying to offer my advice as a business owner who's been on the other side of the situation. Should he have realized its beyond his ability? Absolutely he should have especially over a $3.60 service sale but at the end of the day (in a court setting) you're just a guy with a knife, he's a reputable business owner in the local community, who didnt force you to let him do the work, you went to him and asked him to do it. Honestly I would expect a court to MAYBE award you the $3.60 + costs (and that's months from now) but seeing as how the knife is still physically operational and intact (again this is just my opinion/personal experiences) even tho its no longer sharp, or factory, its still 100% functional to a court of law.

Yeah that's me. I was banned from /r/knives so I just hang out at /r/knifeclub now. :)

Haha thought so. I see a couple other users I recognize from here or BF because of usernames or pictures. Also how do you get banned from /r/knives? I've been posting in both knifeclub and knives so far and haven't had any troubles.

And yeah, I think it's ridiculous some of the suggestions over on reddit. Going to small-claims court over this small a thing will maybe get his money back after a few months, but might also label you as the rabblerouser of the town. Take the $200 lesson and learn how to sharpen your own knives and you'll go on through your knifelife with sharper knives than any mallsharpener can make.

Apparently the mod of /r/knives randomly bans people for no reason. The majority of /r/knife club were banned from there. That's why the sub was started.

I would make them sharpen my lawnmower blade, machete, axe, brushaxe and hoe as repayment if store credit was offered, but never another actual knife

Yeah I made the mistake several years ago to let the guy at Bass Pro sharpen my TI Lum.......needless to say I didn't get charged for him to sharpen it after I flipped out! A few years ago I sent it to the Spydie Spa and they fixed it right up.
