Floating lanyard for Cricket

#1

Post by Andre »

Hi all!
First time poster here, so let me introduce myself.
My name is Andries, I live in Belgium. And have been a knife person all my life.
I recently purchased a Spyderco Cricket SS SE, my first but certainly not my last Spyderco (although they are very hard to find here). And I have just adored it ever since. I mainly use it for EDC.

But I have a question for you guys. I carry my knife around a lot of rivers and lakes and I am kind of looking in to making a floating lanyard for the Cricket. (because i really don't want to lose it :D )
I am thinking of mainly using paracord and cork or wood.

Do any of you have some experience with this? I'v been searching the forum and the internet but I can't find much.
I did come across this : http://x64.xanga.com/24af95357973327513 ... 302948.jpg

This looks pretty cool but I have no idea how to make this.

All other suggestions are welcome!

Thanks!

Why not just a lanyard that clips to your belt?

I used to have one like that on my previous knife.
But then i was wearing swimshorts and didn't have anywhere to clip it too and then i lost it in the middle of a lake...

I have never been a fan of long lanyards, but this seem like the simplest solution for keeping the knife out of the water all together. This is probably what I would do if I was in your position.

Most swimshorts have a place to attach keys, etc inside the waistband.

Yup, you can clip it to the waistband too.

Alternative would be to find a cork that will float your Cricket, then find someone who crochets and have them crochet you a little bag like the one in that photo to hold the cork. Both systems have pros and cons. Long lanyards can snag on things and/or restrict use of the knife. Fobs with a float tend to be bulky. If you're going the fob route, you might want to consider a lighter knife, like the FRN Manbug, as it would allow a smaller float.

Couldn't you just go to a boat shop and get a floating key chain? Maybe two, if the knife is heavy enough. I'm sure they're nice and bright, too. Welcome, by the way. :)
- best wishes, Jazz.

I made a floating lanyard by tying a monkeys fist knot around a small styrofoam ball. It obviously wont float the XL but it should work for a cricket. :)

You could use a wine cork and paint it blaze orange.
Flash Batch request: Flat Iron Salt (CE w/ yellow FRN)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
This has been very helping so far.
I think i am still gonna go with the cork lanyard. I went to a boatshop but most of those lanyard were pretty huge.
I'll post a picture when i have managed to make something.

They make submersion-activated inflating keychains. I can't recall the brand but one will raise almost two pounds to the surface for hours and even has a blinking LED for locating it.

I think that is the one. There is a YouTube vid somewhere of a guy throwing it in a pool. In theory it could easily suspend the Cricket and your keys, probably not a bad investment.

Welcome to the forums Andries.

You may want to consider a neck sheath like this one.

Welcome! If you decide on a fob, make the float several inches from the knife so it doesn't interfere with your grip.
