C75 Kiwi, review. sweet!

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

Ok, Allen gave me a Kiwi for checking his email while he's down. Just got it about 15min ago and finally set it down.

I've handled instore a few times, and loved the design but the price was a kicker.

Now that I've had time to fondle and run around cutting stuff though....

First Impressions:

Even though I've held it before, thats a small edge. Not too hard to find the best grip for cutting. Bit stiff getting out of the pouch, but that'll loosen.

Handle:

Love the bone and stainless combo. Beautiful. Even a rounded lockbar. Thick enough that I don't start to get a cramp until 10min in, with my long fingers.

Blade:

Nice adaptation of a classic. Even the hump for the hole doesn't look out of place.

Edge:

Classic spyderco... hollow ground vg-10. Single pass to clean shaven, either way.

Lock:

Bit stiff right now for one hand close. Have to miltech it tonight. I can force movement vertically, but it's replacing the slipjoint, so thats a mute point.

Weight:

Little bit heavier than my slipjoint, but it's balanced dead centre on the rear choil(middle finger).

Fit/Finish:

Sharp edges all around, other than spine side(and even then the bolsters have edges by the lock front). Inlay is perfect, nothing out on any sides. Nice touch having the only exposed pin being the lock pivot(inlay pins are flush) and raising the centre of the inlays(ends are flush).

Overall:

Had I been given the chance with a passaround to fondle it and go cut stuff, I'd have bought one before, even with the store price of 175cdn+taxes. Well worth it.

edit: spelling

Glad you are pleased with it. The Kiwi truly is a beautifully engineered and made knife. Perfect for those of us who work in an office.

In your review you mention a pouch and I have seen these in some of the pictures on eBay. Were the pouches a later addition or is mine just missing? (I bought mine at the end of last year from Linda.)

Hi VW,

Great review of a great knife. Allen is a generous soul, as many of us have learned!

Hello Wightknight,

I have 2 original Kiwis, both w/o pouch. My 2 SS Kiwis have a neat pouch...go figure!

Patrick the Kiwi is a great Spydie. I have had mine since last Christmas and only since I have gotten the Dodo has it not spent all the time in my pocket. Allen is very generous to have given you a Kiwi. A great Day for you! Take Care and Enjoy!!!

Hi VW and thanks for the review. The Kiwi is a fine "classic" knife. Enjoy it. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
