So does that mean almost 607 for the scalpers?
not making any or much extra money
They sold about $150,000 of product in under 3 hours, at full retail prices. That is a lot more profit than what they make selling Delicas and such to distributors at wholesale prices.

It's over-simplifying to assume that every non-member is a scalper. I'm sure there's quite a few people who are not members here who just wanted to own a great knife at a great price. I'm equally sure that there will be some members here who purchased a knife with the intention to flip it for a profit. The point of this poll was to gauge how many regular members/frequent contributors managed to secure a knife vs. people who are not members (if I'm not mistaken). Even then, the data won't be accurate if not every member who bought a knife responds.
Spyderco sold this knife at a discount to us (MSRP was $249). Spyderco didn't have to do this to make a profit; I'm sure Spyderco will make plenty of $$$ with all the up-coming releases (super-blue sprints, Cru-wear Millie, CF S110V N5, Domino, etc). Spyderco was doing something nice for its loyal supporters here; I'm sure in some manner this was more trouble than it was worth to them....too much drama!

Thanks Prospero, that's exactly what I had in mind when starting this thread. I figured members who'd just secured one or two would be browsing the forums and have time to answer a simple poll question. It wasn't intended for any official record keeping, but I can say for certain: so far, 196 of the forum knives went to voting/contributing/active members on here, and I'm satisfied with that :)
I think the discount FORUM2013 code was a gesture to to somewhat ensure that active members on this forum were acknowledged for actively participating. This release was a forum knife and I think this forum has given the Spyderco think tank an invaluable resource to interact with it's customer base and enthusiasts over the years. You have to consider some Spyderco diehards have been loyal customers back to the early 80's when Sal introduced the Clipit and was selling sharpeners. Some of us are technically challenged or don't have the time to post every day due to life's challenges, but still love to collect, use, and cherish Spyderco knives.I don't personally believe the sprints, mules, limited production, and exclusives and the forum knives were ever intended for the masses but us the enthusiast niche market.I really appreciate what Spyderco does regarding these limited releases as I would not have the chances over and over to experience cutting edge steels such as CPM-110V and K390.My hat is off to Spyderco for making the 2013 forum knife happen....
I chose to pass on this knife, so, zero for me. Forum knives just aren't for me, no matter what the materials are made of. The mad, scrambling rat race to acquire one takes away any enjoyment or pleasure I would get from the knife.
Ever heard a device called GPS tracking system and are you afraid of being tracked by it? If you want to prevent this thing happen on you, then you it is an ideal choice to come and start your first step with the best GPS jammer, then the problem can be easily solved and you can live relaxed.
Unfortunately I was planning to get one but had an unexpected death in the family and was to busy to even think about the forum knife.
Kind of disappointing that some other authentic forum members didn't get one even though they wanted one.
That's very sad about the way you missed out on the forum knife. (Condolences from all I'm sure.) My situation, ordering mine successfully while lying in bed in a fevered sweat from some unknown bug, is a happy joke by comparison. After the enthusiasm slacks up a bit we could hope that you might find a good price or swap with someone on "the other" forum.
I think production plans for these things have to be solidified and materials secured so far in advance of the actual sale that it's difficult to predict how many to produce. I'm sure they couldn't predict how enthusiasm would snowball during the last few weeks before it came out. With small runs like sprints, exclusives, and forum knives, it's really hard for me to understand how they can make much profit. Some have said that over-production can be very costly, and I suppose collectors might think that a surplus on the market would diminish value (but not to most of us forum members). To the Spyderco crew's credit, they somehow managed to put together a few more knives after the sellout.
