Yes, I was talking about the DMT Base for $13.99 and had considered the chefknivestogo block as well.

Hey excptnl,

You didn't mention what range you were looking for the three stones. But I might go with other. I have a set of DMT's that I could not get used to the feel since I started with King stones years ago. I agree with Jack about breaking them in. I jumped in with a knife and got a few nice deep scratches. I took them to one of my rougher water stones since you don't want to be scratching up your nice fine stone.

I have a set of Shapton Glass which I like if I need to just get a quick sharpening since they are splash and go. They give a nice feed back. I got mine from Craftman Studio.

Gotta agree with Ken about the Chocera. They are nice stones just you need to spend some time giving them a good soak first. Bit pricy though.

Only experience I have with Spyderco is with the sharpmaker. Didn't really like the feel of how hard the ceramic was.

I use the 500 Beston/1200 Bester alot. I really like how they cut and feel. I got my set from Dave at Japanese Knife Sharpening, he has a core set he sells with the 5k Suehiro Rika. Haven't tried the 5k stone yet.

I also use the stone holder Jack linked to. Works great for me. Only thing I had to do was cut down the middle rubber support. Unless your table is totally flat it will sometimes bridge and cause the stone to rock.

I guess in the end it would depend on your personal preference of what kind of feedback you like from the tool you are using to sharpen with.

Kev.

Thank you to all who voted and shared opinions as well as experiences. I have not made my decision 100% as of this time, but I have more knowledge at my disposal now.
